Abstract:
A lawnmower has a mower deck and an engine supported on the mower deck. A dome shaped cover is pivotally connected on the mower deck and can be moved between a position over and enclosing the engine and a second position exposing the engine. A cutting blade is located below the mower deck and is connected to and driven by the engine. The dome shaped cover is provided with vents and defines a space between its lower edge and the mower deck so that air can enter the cover through the vents and the defined space. A fan is connected to and driven by said engine for producing, in cooperation with said vents and the defined space, air flow into and through the dome shaped cover and over the engine. The fan is constructed and arranged so that it discharges the air flow it is providing into the grass cutting discharge stream of the mower.
A rotary cutting blade includes an airfoil shape having a leading edge and a trailing edge. The trailing edge includes a cutting edge for cutting vegetation. The rotary cutting blade may be comprised of a steel flat portion and an epoxy/plastic curved portion co-molded onto the steel flat portion to give the rotary cutting blade its airfoil shape. The rotary cutting blade may also include a transverse member, such as a post, mounted on at least one end of the rotary cutting blade and perpendicular to the plane about which the rotary cutting blade rotates. A brush may be mounted on the post. The rotary cutting blade may be used in connection with a lawnmower, wherein the cutting edge may be used to cut through grass and the brush may then be used to remove grass and other debris from the inner surface of the lawnmower deck. A method for operating the rotary cutting blade is further provided.
A centrifugal clutch is provided having a drive member having a rotor and at least one shoe which is radially displaceable as a result of centrifugal force. A clutch drum is oriented coaxially with the drive member having a circular or cylindrical portion for engaging the shoe. The clutch drum is provided with a central hub and an end wall extending between the central hub and the circular or cylindrical portion. The end wall is integrally formed of a sheet metal stamping provided with a plurality of fan blades circumferentially spaced about the central axis and integrally formed in the end wall by showing a radially extending slit into the end wall and bending the adjacent sheet metal axially outward to define a fan blade and an adjacent vent opening.
