Abstract:

A biological sensor which includes: a porous semiconductor structure comprising a central layer interposed between upper and lower layers, each of the upper and lower layers including strata of alternating porosity; and one or more probes coupled to the porous semiconductor structure, the one or more probes binding to a target molecule, whereby a detectable change occurs in a refractive index of the biological sensor upon binding of the one or more probes to the target molecule. Methods of making the biological sensor and methods of using the same are disclosed, as is a detection device which includes such a biological sensor.

Abstract:

A system and method for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of a photocatalyst sample exposed to UV and/or visible light at irradiance levels comparable to those provided by irradiation with sunlight or at least 1,000 W/cmwhile maintaining the spatial resolution of interrogation of at least 0.14 nm. Light is delivered to the sample substantially transversely to the sample's surface from an external broadband source through an optical fiber with an output facet formed at an acute angle with respect to the fiber axis. The light delivery system is adapted to not interrupt an operation of auxiliary TEM systems responsible for changing the TEM-chamber environment.

Abstract:

A hard disk drive spindle synchronization method comprises the steps of: sending an index marker pulse generated within each disk drive to mark in time a beginning of each rotation of the disk spindle thereof to a party line to which all drives are connected, rotating the disk spindle at a slightly different rotational velocity than any other drive of the array, monitoring drive pulses present on the spindle reference party line from other disk drives of the plurality to locate a center of gravity of pulse clusters which is within approximately plus or minus one quarter revolution of the drive's own index marker pulse, upon detection of a said center of gravity, ceasing to rotate the disk spindle at a slightly different rotational velocity during a second phase, adjusting the rotational phase of each drive to converge toward the center of gravity until all drive pulses present on the spindle reference party line converge into a single composite marker pulse present on the spindle reference party line, and maintaining convergence of the drive pulses during continuing operations of the disk drives by monitoring the spindle reference party line and making slight phase adjustments of the rotational phase of each drive, thereby phase locking all of the disk spindles of the plurality of hard disk drives to a single composite index marker signal present on the party line.

In some embodiments, the system can include one or more processors responsible for various functions associated with various levels of responsiveness, such as interfacing with a user, controlling a vacuum pump, providing network connectivity, etc. The system can present GUI screens for controlling and monitoring its operation. The system can determine and monitor flow of fluid in the system by utilizing one or more of the following: monitoring the speed of a pump motor, monitoring flow of fluid in a portion of a fluid flow path by using a calibrated fluid flow restrictor, and monitoring one or more characteristics of the pressure pulses. The system can provide external connectivity for accomplishing various activities, such as location tracking of the system, compliance monitoring, tracking of operational data, remote selection and adjustment of therapy settings, etc.

Abstract:

Embodiments of reduced pressure systems and methods for operating the systems are disclosed. In some embodiments, a system can include a source of negative pressure and a controller configured to present GUI screens for controlling and monitoring operation of the system. The controller can be configured to receive, via the GUI, an adjustment of a negative pressure therapy parameter and adjust (or cause adjustment) of the operation of the negative pressure source based on received adjustment. The controller can be further configured to record historical data parameters associated with negative pressure therapy parameters. The controller can also be configured to transmit (or cause transmission) over a communication channel at least some of recorded historical data. The system can be configured to provide external connectivity for accomplishing various activities, such as location tracking, compliance monitoring, tracking of operational data, remote selection and adjustment of therapy settings, etc.
