Abstract:

A control system for an ice dispenser maintains an icemaker thereof continuously operative whenever an ice storage hopper is less than completely full. This is accomplished by continuing to operate the icemaker while momentarily agitating and leveling the mass of ice in the hopper whenever ice builds up around a thermostat therein, and thereafter sensing whether the ice has dropped away from the thermostat. If it has, the icemaker is maintained in operation and the cycle is repeated. If, however, it has not, then the icemaker is turned off until sufficient ice is dispensed from the hopper to again drop the ice level to below the thermostat. In this manner, the number of on-off cycles of the compressor and other components of the icemaker are minimized in maintaining the hopper completely full, which greatly increases their operating life and reliability.

Abstract:

An improved ice dispensing mechanism for an ice hopper is characterized by a door or gate which is moved by a variable force to cover and uncover an opening in the hopper. A lever is pivotally mounted at one end and connected at an opposite end with the door, and a solenoid plunger is coupled through a spring with a medial portion of the lever, such that actuation of the solenoid retracts the plunger to extend the spring in one embodiment, and to compress the spring in another, to exert a variable force on the lever to pivot the lever and open the door. Should the door be stuck closed because of ice pressure, by virtue of the spring minimum retraction forces are initially encountered by the plunger when the solenoid is initially energized and the plunger fully extended. This enables the plunger to move into the solenoid, whereupon increased forces are exerted on the plunger by the solenoid, and therefore on the spring, to free the door. Consequently, full solenoid power may always be developed to open the door.

Abstract:

A hopper and agitator assembly for an ice dispenser is characterized by an ice storage hopper having at least two ice dispensing openings and dual rotary agitators in the hopper for urging ice bodies through the openings during dispensing operations. The agitators are mounted side by side for rotation in a common plane and have radially extending arms, the ends of which sweep past the dispensing openings. By using dual agitators, the hopper may have a length considerably greater than its width, so that even when the dispensing openings are toward opposite ends of the hopper, the ends of the agitator arms still sweep closely past the openings to efficiently urge ice through the openings.

Abstract:

A flaked ice dispenser comprises a hopper for reception of a mass of small particles of ice, the hopper having a circular upper portion and a polygonal shaped lower portion the corners of which extend outwardly of the upper portion, an impeller which is rotatable in the hopper and has a conical body and equally spaced arms extending radially therefrom, and an ice diverting assembly at an outlet from the hopper. The round upper hopper portion allows ice in that portion to rotate without substantial resistance, the corners of the lower portion allow for displacement of ice therein from the main mass thereof, and the diverting assembly facilitates movement of ice through the outlet. The dispenser enables flaked ice to remain in free flowing form without agglomeration and to be readily dispensed.
