Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army - Washington DC
International Classification:
A62D 3/38
US Classification:
588320, 422165, 588401
Abstract:
The invention provides methods and a reactor for safely destroying containers having toxic chemical and biological materials contained therein. The reactor comprises a pressure vessel having an internal reaction chamber and at least one heater disposed on an exterior of the pressure vessel. A fragment-suppression system is also disposed within the internal reaction chamber. The fragment-suppression system is adapted to receive a container therein, such as an energetic chemical munition, and is adapted to receive a charge for opening the container. An injection port is also provided so that oxidants can be injected into said reaction chamber to neutralize the chemical and biological materials after the container has been opened.

US Classification:
5882495, 588401, 588900
Abstract:
A new High-Throughput Explosive Destruction System is disclosed. The new system is comprised of two side-by-side detonation containment vessels each comprising first and second halves that feed into a single agent treatment vessel. Both detonation containment vessels further comprise a surrounding ventilation facility. Moreover, the detonation containment vessels are designed to separate into two half-shells, wherein one shell can be moved axially away from the fixed, second half for ease of access and loading. The vessels are closed by means of a surrounding, clam-shell type locking seal mechanisms.
Non-Fragmenting Low Friction Bioactive Absorbable Coils For Brain Aneurysm Therapy

Abstract:
Non-fragmenting low friction bioactive absorbable coils are disclosed that improve long-term anatomic results in the endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms. The coils are composed of at least one biocompatible and bioabsorbable polymer. The coils are then coated with a polymer to reduce the friction. The coating can contain drugs, such as growth factors, and can be used to accelerate histopathologic transformation in aneurysms. The coil can be a polymer such as polyglycolic acid (PGA), poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), polycaprolactive, poly-L-lactide, polydioxanone, polycarbonates, polyanhydrides, polyglycolic acid/poly-L-lactic acid copolymers, polyhydroxybutyrate/hydroxyvalerate copolymers, or combinations thereof.

Abstract:
A differential global positioning system (DGPS) processor can include an almost fixed integer ambiguity (AFIA) module for generating in real-time a multiple dimensional state vector of integer ambiguities and multiple dimensional corrections. The AFIA module can use double difference (DD) measurements for pseudo-range (PR) and carrier phase (CP) pairs generated from at least three global positioning system (GPS) receivers. A DGPS processor can be included in a high data rate real time attitude determination (RTAD) system to achieve high heading accuracy with high integrity.

Method And Apparatus For Waste Destruction Using Supercritical Water Oxidation
Brent Lowell Haroldsen - Manteca CA Benjamin Chiau-pin Wu - San Ramon CA
International Classification:
G21C 900
US Classification:
422208
Abstract:
The invention relates to an improved apparatus and method for initiating and sustaining an oxidation reaction. A hazardous waste, is introduced into a reaction zone within a pressurized containment vessel. An oxidizer, preferably hydrogen peroxide, is mixed with a carrier fluid, preferably water, and the mixture is heated until the fluid achieves supercritical conditions of temperature and pressure. The heating means comprise cartridge heaters placed in closed-end tubes extending into the center region of the pressure vessel along the reactor longitudinal axis. A cooling jacket surrounds the pressure vessel to remove excess heat at the walls. Heating and cooling the fluid mixture in this manner creates a limited reaction zone near the center of the pressure vessel by establishing a steady state density gradient in the fluid mixture which gradually forces the fluid to circulate internally. This circulation allows the fluid mixture to oscillate between supercritical and subcritical states as it is heated and cooled.
Methods And Devices For Analyte Collection, Extraction, Concentration, And Detection For Clinical Applications
In various embodiments devices and methods for the detection and/or quantification of clinically relevant pathogens (e.g., bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc.) are provided. In certain embodiments the device comprises a lateral-flow assay that detects the bacterium at a concentration of less than about 6×10cells/mL, less than about 3×10cells/ml, less than about 1×10CFU/mL, or less than about 50 μg/mL. In certain embodiments the device comprises an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) comprising a mixed phase solution that separates into a first phase solution and a second phase solution; and a lateral-flow assay (LFA). In certain embodiments the device comprises a flow-through system comprising a concentration component comprising an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) comprising a mixed phase solution that separates into a first phase solution and a second phase solution; and a detection component disposed beneath said concentration component.
