  • Optimized Backward Reference Selection With Reduced Entropy For Image Compression

    view source
  • US Patent:
    8160372, Apr 17, 2012
  • Filed:
    Jan 16, 2008
  • Appl. No.:
    12/014964
  • Inventors:
    Jyrki Alakuijala - Adliswil, CH
    Hannu Helminen - Zurich, CH
Bernhard Seefeld - New York NY, US
  • Assignee:
Google Inc. - Mountain View CA
  • International Classification:
    G06K 9/36
  • US Classification:
    382232, 382239, 382246
  • Abstract:
A system (and a method) are disclosed for optimizing lossless data compression in digital images systems. The system includes an optimized backward reference selection module and an entropy encoder. The optimized backward reference selection module selects the backward references that the backward reference distances and/or lengths are an integer multiple of size of data elements. The optimized backward reference selection module further compacts the entropy code of the backward references by favoring backward references that have the intrinsic locality of source data stream. The optimization offered by the backward reference selection module allows an improved compression ratio and faster compression speed for lossless image compression.

  • Abstract:
A system and method is provided of generating a map. In one aspect, the map is selected based on a location provided by a user and listings are selected based on their proximity to the location, whether they match a query provided by the user, and the number of matching listings within regions of the map.
  • Personalized Place Recommendations Using Collections Of Place Listings

    view source
  • US Patent:
    8639693, Jan 28, 2014
  • Filed:
    Nov 11, 2011
  • Appl. No.:
    13/294602
  • Inventors:
    John Hawkins - London, GB
    Andrew Eland - Zurich, CH
Bernhard Seefeld - New York NY, US
  • Assignee:
Google Inc. - Mountain View CA
  • International Classification:
    G06F 17/30
  • US Classification:
    707736, 707737
  • Abstract:
Personal recommendations are provided to users based on a relationship between place listings which with a user has interacted and collections of place listings. The user may interact with a place listing by reviewing the place, or accessing a web page that includes user-reviewed places. The collections of place listings are used to calculate a recommendation score for a candidate listing based on aggregate co-occurrence of the place listing and the candidate listing in the collections. The recommendation scores identify a probability that the user would appreciate the candidate listing based on the user's interaction with the place listing. Justifications may also be provided for display on the user's device to identify the relevance of the recommended listing.

  • US Patent:
    20100191798, Jul 29, 2010
  • Filed:
    Jan 26, 2009
  • Appl. No.:
    12/359734
  • Inventors:
Bernhard Seefeld - New York NY, US
Octavian Procopiuc - Summit NJ, US
Nina Kang - Brooklyn NY, US

    G06F 15/16
  • US Classification:
    709203, 707E17014, 707E17018
  • Abstract:
A system and method is provided of generating a map. In one aspect, the map is transmitted by a server as an image. Listings are selected based on both their proximity to the location and whether they match arbitrary words provided by a user, with one set being transmitted as text and another set being transmitted as image data representing icons on a transparent background. In response, a user's computer displays the image of the second set as an overlay on the map, and processes the text to display the first set as icons on the map.

  • US Patent:
    20130257742, Oct 3, 2013
  • Filed:
    Mar 28, 2012
  • Appl. No.:
    13/432042
  • Inventors:
    Jonah Jones - Darlinghurst, AU
Bernhard Seefeld - New York NY, US
  • Assignee:

    G09G 5/00
  • US Classification:
    345173, 345156
  • Abstract:
Systems and methods for navigating imagery, such as geographic imagery, are provided. A user can initiate a pan of the imagery in a viewport presented on a display of a computing device by throwing the imagery in the viewport. The motion of the imagery pan can be controlled based on content displayed in or near the viewport such that the imagery pan is more likely to land near predominate features depicted in the viewport. For instance, features depicted in the viewport can act as “friction” or “gravity” on the imagery pan, adjusting the pan rate and/or pan direction of the imagery as the imagery pans across the viewport. In particular aspects, the motion of the imagery pan can be adjusted based on weights associated with features depicted in or near the viewport. Features with higher weights will affect the motion of the imagery pan more than features with lower weights.
