Abstract:

A non-black roof sheeting material may be prepared from a composition of matter comprising 100 parts by weight of at least one polymeric rubber selected from the group consisting of ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymers, ethylene-propylene copolymers and other polyolefinic type polymers; from about 20 to about 300 parts by weight of a blend of at least two mineral fillers, per 100 parts of said polymeric rubber, wherein one of said mineral fillers is a reinforcing silica and wherein another of said mineral fillers is a chemically modified clay; from about 20 to about 150 parts by weight of a processing oil, per 100 parts of said polymeric rubber; from 1 to about 6 parts by weight of a sulfur cure package having at least one accelerator but being devoid of any thiuram accelerators, said cure package allowing said sheeting material to cure at about the same rate as a comparable black roof sheeting material at 160. degree. C. The non-black (white) sheeting material may form the ply of a white-on-black bilaminant roofing membrane or it may represent both the top and bottom ply of a non-black (white) polymeric roof sheeting material.

Abstract:

A laminate cover for sealing an opening in a weatherproof roofing membrane includes a top sheet of a weather resistant material, preferably an uncured butyl rubber EPDM material, and a complementary shaped and sized lower sheet of a lightly cured butyl rubber having opposed tacky surfaces. A layer of a flowable sealing material such as an uncured butyl rubber sealing compound having a smaller dimension than that of the lower sheet, is trapped between the lower sheet and a bottom release coated carrier. Upon removal of the carrier, the cover is pressed over the opening to be sealed and an exposed peripheral tacky area of the lower sheet secures the cover to the membrane and traps the sealing compound therein. Applied or ambient heat will cause the sealing compound to flow into the opening to effectively seal the same, and will vulcanize the top sheet to provide abrasion and weather resistance for the cover.

Abstract:

Vulcanizable elastomeric roof sheet materials for roofing having improved burn resistivity and prepared from a polymeric composition of matter comprise at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of polyolefins prepared from monomers containing at least two carbon atoms and mixtures thereof, the polymer having a crystallinity of up to about 2 percent by weight; about 20 to 125 parts by weight of one or more non-black mineral fillers per 100 parts of the polymer, about 50 to 110 parts by weight of one or more black-type fillers per 100 parts of the polymer; and from about 50 to 70 parts by weight of a processing material or softener per 100 parts of the polymer. A method of covering a roof comprises the steps of applying sheets of vulcanizable elastomeric roof sheet material prepared from a vulcanizable polymeric composition of matter, to the roof being covered; overlapping adjacent edges of the roof sheet material; and adhesively seaming the overlapped layers of the roof sheet material together to form a continuous elastomeric roofing membrane. The composition of matter is devoid of any flame retardant rubber chemical additives, heavy metals and halogen-containing polymers and possess improved burn resistivity.

Abstract:

An adhesive tape composition includes a polymer blend comprising at least one EPDM rubber, and preferably three EPDM rubbers in substantially equal amounts, and an adhesive-enhancing polymer selected from the group consisting of polyisoprene, polybutadiene, and ethylene-propylene copolymer and mixtures thereof. The tape adhesive composition further includes at least one tackifying additive compatible with said polymer blend and a sulfur and organic accelerator cure package for said polymer blend, the adhesive composition being devoid of butyl rubber which is found in most other adhesive tape compositions. This composition is seen as providing excellent long-term heat aging, weathering resistance, and low temperature properties as compared to adhesive tape compositions containing butyl rubber. Moreover, the adhesive tape composition provides more surface tack, better "quick-grab", and higher green strength as compared to adhesive tape compositions containing 100 percent EPDM rubber. A method is also provided for covering roofs which includes the step of employing the adhesive tape composition.

Flat rubber sheets are joined together at their primed surfaces utilizing an adhesive tape composition which features at least one EPDM rubber and will provide a long-term, water-tight barrier. The adhesive tape composition is a solventless, preformed, tacky composition comprising a) at least one crosslinkable EPDM rubber, b) a filler, either of the reinforcing or semi-reinforcing variety, c) one or more compatible tackifiers, d) a softener, and lastly, e) a cure system for the rubbery polymer. The tape composition itself has excellent ozone, moisture, weathering and heat aging resistance as well as superior low temperature properties.

Abstract:

A roofing primer composition including a bromobutyl rubber, a polyurethane, wherein the polyurethane is the reaction product of a phenolic resin and an isocyanate having more than two functionalities, the polyurethane being formed in the presence of a catalyst, and a solvent, wherein the solvent is preferably selected from the group consisting of parachlorobenzotrifluoride, 1-dodecene, toluene, hexane, heptane methylene chloride, 1,1,1-trichlorethane, xylene, methanol, 1-tetradecene, chloroform, tetrachloro ethylene and ethanol. This primer composition exhibits improved adhesion during application, exhibits improved shelf life, is not water sensitive, and can contain a low volatile solvent.
