A context efficient keyboard entry method uses default keypad maps based on statistical information and the context of the currently entered message in order to improve character entry efficiency. In one embodiment of the invention, different keypad maps are used for the first letter, second letter and Rest Of Word (ROW). In another embodiment, the characters assigned to each keypad key are arranged based on alpha character profile usage while alphabetical order is maintained. In still another embodiment, dynamic keypad labeling is used to change from two key entry modes such as numeric mode or alpha (or alpha numeric) modes, or between a dialing mode and a text entry mode.

  • Abstract:
The invention concerns a method () and system () for providing adjustments for a compass (). The method can include the steps of receiving () geographical positional information from a communications network (), generating () a declination value based on the geographical positional information and calibrating () a reading for the compass using the declination value. The receiving, generating and calibrating steps can be performed at a portable electronic device () containing the compass. As an example, the geographical positioning information can be based on at least one of latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates, an area code and a postal delivery code.
  • Method And System For Collision Avoidance In Wireless Communications

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20060251107, Nov 9, 2006
  • Filed:
    Apr 21, 2005
  • Appl. No.:
    11/111417
  • Inventors:
Bruce Geren - Chandler AZ, US
Bobby Anderson - Gilbert AZ, US
  • International Classification:
    H04J 3/02
  • US Classification:
    370462000
  • Abstract:
The invention concerns a method () and mobile unit () for reducing transmission collisions. The method can include—in a systemless call environment—receiving () at a plurality of receiving mobile units (B, C) a call from an original transmitting mobile unit (A) and in the plurality of receiving mobile units, selectively randomly delaying () transmissions from the receiving units to reduce the probability that such transmissions will collide with one another. The selectively randomly delaying a transmission at the receiving units step can include performing () a pre-transmission scan when a transmission element () of one of the receiving mobile units is activated or by assigning () a random delay to an idle mode () following a receive session in the receiving mobile units.
  • Multi-Channel Echo Cancellation Method And Apparatus

  • US Patent:
    58569707, Jan 5, 1999
  • Filed:
    Aug 5, 1996
  • Appl. No.:
    8/692353
  • Inventors:
Donald Fong Gee - Chandler AZ
Bruce Edward Geren - Chandler AZ
James Brian Piket - Gilbert AZ
William Chunhung Yip - Scottsdale AZ
  • Assignee:
    Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
  • International Classification:
    H04B 323
  • US Classification:
    370286
  • Abstract:
An echo canceller (500) utilizes a central control unit (502) (CCU) and at least one convolution processing unit (504) (CPU) to perform echo cancellation on one or more channels. A method for operating the echo canceller (500) controls reading (706) one or more reference signals (510) and reflected signals (512), convolution and adaptive processing (11, 21, 31, 41) using the CPUs (504), and post-processing (702) to produce one or more echo cancelled signals (514). Convolution and adaptive processing for multiple channels can be performed simultaneously (11, 31) by multiple CPUs (504), or in a time-multiplexed manner (11, 21) by a single CPU (504), or a combination (11, 21, 31, 41) of simultaneous and time-multiplexing by multiple CPUs (504). CCU (502) is able to perform processing functions (702-730) while CPUs (504) perform convolution and adaptive processing (11, 21, 31, 41).
  • Non-Pyrotechnic Cues And Method For Area Weapons Effects Simulation System

    view source
  • US Patent:
    55184014, May 21, 1996
  • Filed:
    Apr 29, 1994
  • Appl. No.:
    8/235732
  • Inventors:
Mark R. FitzGerald - Phoenix AZ
Bruce E. Geren - Chandler AZ
Edward P. Katarski - Mesa AZ
  • Assignee:
    Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
  • International Classification:
    F41A 3300
  • US Classification:
    434 11
  • Abstract:
Non-pyrotechnic cues are used with an area weapons effects system. These cues include sound devices, flashing lights and smoke deposition devices. A processor detects the required type of display from an input message and displays an appropriate sound to correspond to the type of weapon used. In addition, visual displays are coordinated with the audio display to provide simulated explosions with appropriate sounds ("bangs") and lights ("flashing lights") and smoke.
  • Dual Positioning Location System

    view source
  • US Patent:
    56443170, Jul 1, 1997
  • Filed:
    Mar 27, 1995
  • Appl. No.:
    8/411354
  • Inventors:
Richard James Weston - Mesa AZ
Bruce Edward Geren - Chandler AZ
  • Assignee:
    Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
  • International Classification:
    G01S 502
    G01S 302
    G01C 2100
  • US Classification:
    342357
  • Abstract:
An automatic vehicle location system (10) includes a radio positioning system receiver (14) which receives GPS radio signals (18) and includes a two-gimbaled gyroscope (22), which is used by a dead-reckoning positioning system. A controller (43) determines position based upon the radio positioning system when the radio signals (18) are available and upon dead-reckoning when the radio signals (18) are not available. The dead-reckoning process is based upon a compensation factor which is established in response to data received from the radio positioning system (14). The compensation factor acts as an adjustment to an inner gimbal angle to compensate for a minor drift away from level by the inner gimbal (32).
  • User Equipment Configured For Power Savings During Srs Antenna Switching

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20200204323, Jun 25, 2020
  • Filed:
    Mar 4, 2020
  • Appl. No.:
    16/809094
  • Inventors:
    - Santa Clara CA, US
Bruce Geren - Chandler AZ, US
Jie Cui - San Jose CA, US
Yang Tang - San Jose CA, US
    Tom Harel - Shefayim, IL
  • International Classification:
    H04L 5/00
    H04W 72/04
  • Abstract:
Embodiments of an apparatus of a user equipment (UE) configured for operation in a fifth-generation system (5GS) are described herein. The UE comprises first and second array antennas for transmission of mmWave signals including a sounding-reference signal (SRS). In response to decoding radio-resource configuration (RRC) signalling that indicates antenna switching for SRS, the UE initiates a countdown timer and transitions the second array antenna from a low-power state to an active state. If a downlink control information (DCI) indicating SRS antenna switching is not received while the countdown timer is active, the UE generates a command to transition the second array antenna to a low-power state upon expiration of the countdown timer.
