Abstract:

In a telecommunications network, such as an optical mesh network, at a node along a service path satisfying a demand from a start node to an end node, the node can detect a failure in the service path by any of three different ways: (a) by monitoring incoming payload signals from its previous node along the service path for a loss-of-signal (LOS) condition; (b) by monitoring the incoming payload signals from its previous node along the service path for an in-band alarm indication signal; and (c) by monitoring an out-of-band signaling channel for a failure message transmitted from its previous node along the service path. The node then determines appropriate actions as part of a distributed restoration procedure depending on whether the node is an intermediate node or the end node along the service path. If the node is an intermediate node, then the node passes the out-of-band failure message to its next node along the service path. If the nod is the end node, then the node transmits an out-of-band restore message to its previous node along the corresponding restoration path. In both cases, the node proceeds to reconfigure its cross-connect for the transition from the service path to the restoration path.

Abstract:

An optical switching apparatus wherein one or more information-bearing collimated laser beams are each launched into free-space and directed onto a selected photo-receptor to effect an optical cross-connection. Each launched beam is split into two separate components: a payload component, and a monitor component. The payload component of the beam is directed toward a photo-receptor, and the monitor component is directed toward a photo-sensor. The direction in which a particular information-bearing beam is launched is controlled in response to feedback received from the photo-sensor as a function of the position the monitor component associated with that information-bearing beam.

Abstract:

A scalable, non-blocking fiber optic matrix switch has two arrays of light beam collimators arranged to face one another in free space, and a number of optical fibers coupled to each of the arrays. Each collimator has a tubular body with a fiber receiving part at one end, and a lens mounting part at an opposite end of the body. A lens fixed in the mounting part produces a collimated light beam from light emitted from an end of an optical fiber inserted in the fiber receiving part. First and second motor assemblies with corresponding positioning elements displace the collimator body so that its light beam is steered to a desired position along "X" and "Y" axes in response to operation of the motor assemblies. A signal carried on a fiber entering a first collimator in one array can be switched into a fiber of a second collimator in the opposite array, by displacing the collimators so as to direct the beam of the first collimator to align with a lens axis of the second. For an N. times. N matrix switch, N collimators are used at each array, and up to N optical signals can be cross-connected without blocking.

Abstract:

A facility is provided which determines the optimum phase of a sample clock signal that is used to acquire a copy of an image containing text. In particular, the phase of the sample signal is set to an initial value and is thereafter incremented by a predetermined amount of time following the acquistion of each of a predetermined number of copies of the image, in which each such copy is defined by respective pixel values. Upon acquiring a current copy of the image, a histogram is formed from ones of the pixel values and is stored in memory in place of a priorly stored histogram if the latest histogram contains more pixel values indicative of text than the priorly stored histogram. The phase of the sample clock signal is then adjusted to the phase associated with the histogram that is stored in memory following the last of such acquisitions.

Abstract:

A voice-actuated switching system selectively connects multiple microphones to an audio line in accordance with the output signal levels from each of the microphones. The state of each microphone is determined by its use and can exit in one of three states: selected, mixed, or off. The microphone with the greatest output signal level at any given time is considered in the selected state and is selected for connecting to the audio line with no loss. Those microphones in the mixed state have their output signal levels attenuated before being connected to the audio line. And those microphones in the off state have their outputs essentially disconnected from the audio line. The user of a microphone while in the mixed state can be heard along with the user of a microphone while in the selected state although at a lower level. Improved accuracy is obtained in the microphone selection process by comparing the microphone signals to each other and to a reference level that takes into account any offsets induced into the signals by the system. The system can accommodate any number of microphones.
