Abstract:

A modular drill bit mounts legs within recesses in a body which are parallel to the central axis of the body using threaded studs with tapered outer portions, in conjuction with an attached pin having recesses therein receiving the upper ends of the legs. The lower ends of the legs terminate in spindles of open face configuration rotatably receiving cones thereon for rotation via a arrangement of bushings, roller bearings and thrust bearings, and a plurality of seals which slide and therefore rotate relative to both the leg spindle and the cone with the help of pressure compensating apparatus. A bushing disposed in the cone-leg spindle interface has oil-lubricated rubber rods disposed in apertures therein to prevent lock-up on an adjacent bearing surface. The cone is held on the leg spindle by a lock nut forming one end of a race for receiving rollers of a roller bearing, in conjunction with a ring-nut secured to an extended portion of the cone protecting the leg from wear and damage. The cone-leg spindle interface is lubricated by oil containing Teflon and molybdenum and which is pumped by a main thrust bearing for recirculation through radiator apparatus in the side of the leg.

Each cone is provided with cutting teeth which are inclined in the direction of cone rotation and which cover the cone surface in a manner which provides scraping of substantially the entire bottom surface of the hole being drilled and in a manner providing efficient scraping and crushing action. The cutting teeth are mounted in holes in the cone and then brazed in place, as are a plurality of ceramic buttons mounted within the extended portion of the cone to protect such portion and to provide backup gauging for a row of large cutting teeth mounted on an outer rim of the cone and having the cutting edges thereof inclined in alternating fashion.

Abstract:

A two axis controller for controlling a tanker aircraft in-flight refueling boom while maneuvering prior to engagement with the receiver aircraft and including a boom load alleviation system after engagement. Movement of the control stick is transmitted mechanically to a position transducer. The transducer provides a signal to an actuator to effect boom control. The transducer output is also transmitted to a servo motor which is mechanically connected to the control stick. During the free flight mode, when the operator is manually controlling the boom, the servo motor provides a resisting force to stick movement that varies as a function of the transducer signal. Following coupling of the two airplanes, which initiates the automatic load alleviation system, the same servo motor back drives the control stick in response to boom force and position signals to alleviate boom forces. Manual override of the automatic system is possible at any time.

Abstract:

The control system includes a control member connected to a control centering device which resists operational control member movement and returns it to a neutral position upon release thereof. Force and position sensors connected to the control member determine operator force exerted thereon as well as the position thereof. Output from the sensors is transmitted to a computer which also receives data relating to position of aircraft controlled surfaces and aerodynamic forces acting on the aircraft as well as flight data, etc. The computer combines and compares that data with other data relating to frictional forces produced by movement of the mechanical control system and data relating to desired control member resistive forces under predetermined operational conditions. The computer thereby determines the magnitude of the control member resistive forces required to produce the desired tactile feel and provides an output based thereon to an actuator which applies these forces to the control member. When in automatic pilot mode, the computer provides an output to the actuator to move the control member to a position representing the command output that the computer provides to the controlled surfaces to control the position thereof.

Abstract:

A rock boring bit assembly which includes a body configured for engagement with associated driving mechanism. At least one roller cutter is rotatably mounted on the body. The roller cutter includes a plurality of cutting member disposed about the entire face or surface thereof in generally upstanding relationship. The cutting members are arrayed over the roller cutter surface with no channel between adjacent arrays of cutting members. The cutters have generally rectilinear edges and each of the edges is disposed in substantially oblique relationship to a plurality of other rectilinear edges of other cutting members disposed proximate thereto.
