  • US Patent:
    8327956, Dec 11, 2012
  • Filed:
    Dec 11, 2009
  • Appl. No.:
    12/636506
  • Inventors:
Steven W. Drews - Cypress TX, US
Cary Maurstad - Friendswood TX, US
  • Assignee:
Varel International, Ind., L.P. - Carrollton TX
  • International Classification:
    E21B 10/36
  • US Classification:
    175431
  • Abstract:
A PDC bit includes a plurality of blades including primary blades and secondary blades. The included primary blades are set with PDC cutters in accordance with a “single set” methodology. The included secondary blades, however, are set with PDC cutters using a type of “plural set” methodology such that the radial positions of cutters on a secondary blade match the radial positions of cutters on a single set primary which is immediately preceding that secondary blade. Plural secondary blades can be positioned to follow a single primary blade, and the cutters on those plural secondary blades will have radial positions matching the cutters of the immediately preceding single set primary blade.

  • International Classification:
    E21B 10/46
  • US Classification:
    175378, 175377, 175431
  • Abstract:
A PDC bit includes a plurality of blades. A blade includes a primary cutter row and a secondary cutter row. Primary PDC cutters on the primary cutter row are set in accordance with a single set methodology. Backup PDC cutters on the secondary cutter row are set in accordance with a methodology wherein a radial position of each backup PDC cutter in the secondary cutter row is offset from a radial position of each primary PDC cutter in the primary cutter row. The blade further includes a tertiary cutter row. Additional backup PDC cutters on the tertiary cutter row are set in accordance with a methodology wherein a radial position of each additional backup PDC cutter in the tertiary cutter row is offset from a radial position of each primary PDC cutter in the primary cutter row. The backup cutter setting methodology is effectively radially positions the included backup PDC cutters (in the secondary cutter row and/or tertiary cutter row) between primary PDC cutters in the primary cutter row.

  • International Classification:
    E21B 10/00
  • US Classification:
    175428000
  • Abstract:
A PDC cutter utilizes the combination of an elliptical shape with higher thermal resistance obtained through leaching to provide a cutter which is more effective than a cutter using either concept alone. The PDC cutter includes a tungsten carbide portion with protrusions extending from a surface thereof in a pattern. The diamond volume is mounted to the surface wherein the protrusions allow for the diamond volume to be larger about a perimeter edge of the cutter and smaller/shallower in a center region of the cutter. The protrusions providing surfaces for the diamond layer (table) to bond to the underlying tungsten carbide portion. With this configuration, diamond volume is maximized around the edge of the cutter.
  • Single Mold Milling Process For Fabrication Of Rotary Bits To Include Necessary Features Utilized For Fabrication In Said Process

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20090025984, Jan 29, 2009
  • Filed:
    Jul 25, 2008
  • Appl. No.:
    12/180276
  • Inventors:
Scott Buteaud - Houston TX, US
Cary Maurstad - Friendswood TX, US
  • Assignee:
Varel International, Ind., L.P. - Carrollton TX
  • International Classification:
    E21B 10/42
  • US Classification:
    175421, 761084, 164161
  • Abstract:
A bit mold is milled using a turning stage which forms a base mold component and a base gagering component. Next, a blade milling stage is performed in which the base mold component and base gagering component are milled to define integral junkslot formers separated by blade regions. Lastly, a pocket milling stage is performed in which the blade regions and integral junkslot formers of the base mold component are milled to define a plurality of cutter pockets in primary and perhaps secondary rows. Each cutter pocket includes a seat portion and a face portion. The milling of the pocket milling stage provides, at one or more of the cutter pockets, a facet. This facet is provided in an area about the junkslot former associated with the face portion of the cutter pocket, the face portion having, due to the presence of the facet, a surface for matching a cutter core displacement end surface without voids of a size which would require the use of fill material. The facet is also provided on either side of the pocket associated with the seat portion to avoid the need to clay the sides of the displacement for providing top-loading clearances. The milling process at the pocket milling stage further supports definition of relief and erosion resistance features in the mold.
  • Earth Boring Bit With Protected Seal Means

    7/708854
  • Inventors:
Cary A. Maurstad - Kingwood TX
James R. Hall - Huffman TX
  • Assignee:
Hughes Tool Company - Houston TX
  • International Classification:
    E21B 1022
    F16C 3376
    F16J 1550
  • US Classification:
    175228
  • Abstract:
An earth boring bit having a body, pressure compensating lubricating system and cantilevered bearing shaft with an annular seal surface and a radial seal surface. A cutter is rotatably secured to the bearing shaft, with an annular seal recess having radial and cylindrical seal surfaces to oppose the seal surfaces on the body and bearing shaft to define a seal gland. A resilient and annular packing ring is compressed between the cylindrical seal surfaces, but has a length less than the minimum length of the gland. A shroud extends inwardly near the outer backface a selected distance behind the packing ring to bias it inwardly. The shroud extends inwardly toward the bearing not more than about 30% of the cross-sectional thickness of the O-ring in the relaxed condition. The O-ring is compressed in a range of about 10 to 15 percent.

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20200011137, Jan 9, 2020
  • Filed:
    Oct 16, 2018

A first subset of the row of cutters is oriented at a negative side rake angle. A second subset of the row of cutters is oriented at a zero or slightly positive side rake angle. The first and the second subsets are alternating. An innermost cutter of the first subset has a maximum absolute value of the negative side rake angle. The absolute value negative side rake angles of the rest of the cutters decrease as their distance from a center of the cutting face increases.
