Abstract:A method for proximity detection in a wireless communication network. A node attempts to determine the proximity of the closest neighboring node by transmitting a ranging request. Other nodes respond, and the first node to receive and respond to the request will have the shortest response time and thus will be the closest node. Exact ranges can be determined by applying Time-Of-Arrival (TOA) techniques to node response times. To further avoid collisions, one or more frames of the response messages can be same, making the multiple responses appear as multi-path. The group of responders can be narrowed and individual groups probed in a search pattern until the single nearest node is known or range of the nearest node is known. The ranging node may then use ordinary unicast mechanisms to probe this node, or begin scanning the groups again, or interleave the two mechanisms as desired.

Abstract:A communications network which is capable of effectively and efficiently handling mobility of wireless user terminals between access point nodes of a packet-switched network with minimal overhead and packet loss, and a method for using the same. The communications network employs a packet-switched core network and a plurality of access points coupled to the core network. Each access point is adapted to provide any user terminal with wireless communications access to the core network when that user terminal becomes affiliated with that access point. The system and method further employ ad-hoc routing techniques during handoff of a wireless user terminal between access point nodes of the core network to enable the network to maintain multiple paths via which data packets are provided to the user terminal during handoff to substantially eliminate packet loss during handoff.

Abstract:A system and method for providing a mechanism for trans-medium address resolution on a network with at least one highly disconnected medium having multiple access points to other media. The system and method provides a “unique” media access control (MAC) address in address resolution protocol (ARP) for mobile nodes in an ad-hoc network, correctly identifying the optimum intelligent access point (IAP) for node communication where the optimum IAP changes more rapidly than traditional address updating may be able to accommodate. Medium layer routing protocols recognize medium frames addressed with this unique MAC address should be routed to the currently associated IAP, whichever IAP that might be at the moment the frame is sent.

Abstract:A system and method for providing the ability to selectively share data in a network routing device with an associated host. The system and method employs a hardware firewall in the routing device which restricts the host such that it can only access areas in shared memory which contains data destined for the host. The routing device CPU notifies the host of pending data and the location of that data in the shared memory. The hardware firewall is also notified of the location in shared memory which the host may access. When the host attempts to read the data, the firewall ensures that only the stated memory area or areas are accessed by the host. Once the data has been read by the host, the firewall is notified to cancel the host's ability to access the shared memory until such time as a new packet destined for the host arrives in the routing device.

Abstract:A system and method for a media access control (MAC) scheduling algorithm having a distributed, self-coordinating approach to provide use fairness and service differentiation in an ad hoc network by using control RTS/CTS messages carrying node status information. A local scheduling algorithm uses the overheard RTS/CTS information with attributes specifying nodes' status to maximize the awareness of the neighborhood status for a multi-channel system where data and ACK messages are transmitted through different data channels. If the system uses a single channel, the corresponding information may be carried by using DATA or ACK messages. The algorithm measures the offered load, carried load, and backlogged load in the neighborhood to adjust the channel access timer to provide use fairness among different nodes, different links, and different streams. The algorithm can further both calculate the priority level based on the node queue status, and calculate the priority level based on the neighbor status, to break the contention tiers and enable the service differentiation.

Abstract:A system and method for providing a traffic control scheme for QoS provision and congestion control across multiple interfaces of wireless nodes (and ), such as wireless access points (and ), communicating in a wireless multihopping communication network (). The nodes (and ) can include multiple transceivers. The system and method detects bottleneck interfaces in these nodes () to control the traffic along the path of the corresponding traffic flow. Different measurements and cross-layer feedback are used to differentiate the cause of the congestion, such as wireless link quality degradation due to fading or degradation due to congestion in a shared medium. The nodes () inform each other on the status of their congestion level. High and low level signaling and interruption mechanisms are used to control the interfaces of the congested node (or ) to adjust traffic flow and alleviate the congestion.
