Abstract:

Various systems and methods for automatic data rate detection are provided. In one embodiment, a system is provided that includes a clock and data recovery circuit embodied in a first integrated circuit, the clock and data recovery circuit being configured to re-clock a data stream. The system also includes an automatic rate detection system embodied in a second integrated circuit, where the first integrated circuit is in data communication with the second integrated circuit. Also, the automatic rate detection system is configured to determine a data rate of the data stream upon identifying a transition in the data rate of the data stream based upon the state of the at least one status flag received from the clock and data recovery circuit.

Abstract:

According to one embodiment, a smart photovoltaic (PV) panel comprises a plurality of PV cell groups each including at least one PV cell. The smart PV panel also includes at least one serial boost combiner circuit (SBCC) configured to receive an output from the plurality of PV cell groups as inputs. Each SBCC comprises several boost blocks connected in parallel, each of the boost blocks including a switching device and a respective boost block output directly connected to an output node of the SBCC. In addition a corresponding power terminal of each of the switching devices is directly connected to a common ground node of the SBCC. In one embodiment, the smart PV panel also includes a power inverter coupled to the one or more SBCCs and a communication unit interfaced with a local controller.

Abstract:

A method and system for a bit error rate (BER) contour-based optimum decision threshold and sampling phase selection in optical communication systems is disclosed. According to one aspect of the invention, for a selected sampling phase and a decision threshold, high BER values are measured. Low BER values are approximated from the high BER values using error functions. The procedures are repeated for all selected sampling phases and decision thresholds and corresponding BER values are calculated. The sampling phases and decision thresholds for each specific BER value are plotted to create the BER contour diagrams. The optimum decision threshold for a sampling phase is calculated by equating the BER due to marks (“s”) and the BER due to spaces (“s”). In one aspect of the invention, a BER test module resides in the receiver. The BER test module calculates the BERs and the optimum decision threshold and sampling phase.

According to one embodiment, a system configured to provide dynamic power management for a plurality of energy cells comprises an array of energy cells for providing a primary current path to a load, and a respective power stage for each energy cell. The power stages are configured to transfer power to and from each respective energy cell. The system further comprises a temporary energy storage node enabling energy transfer from a first plurality of energy cells comprised by the array of energy cells to a second plurality of energy cells comprised by the array of energy cells. In one embodiment, the system further comprises a feedback system for maintaining the to temporary energy storage node at a constant average power.

Disclosed herein is an energy storage system and related method. According to one embodiment, such a system comprises a power management system and a plurality of energy banks coupled to the power management system, wherein each of the plurality of energy banks is capable of being independently discharged through the power management system. The power management system is configured to select at least one of the plurality of energy banks to transfer energy between the energy storage system and a machine powered using the energy storage system. According to one embodiment, the method comprises determining an energy transfer requirement of the machine powered by the energy storage system, selecting at least one of the plurality of energy banks for responding to the energy transfer requirement, and transferring energy between the selected energy bank(s) and the machine according to the energy transfer requirement.

According to one embodiment, a system for actively managing energy banks during an energy transfer process comprises a plurality of energy banks configured for use as a group of energy banks and characterized by a desired state-of-charge (SOC), and a power management system coupled across each of the energy banks. The power management system is configured to selectively drive at least one of the energy banks to a modified SOC different from the desired SOC without interrupting the energy transfer process. Abstract:

A fault insertion circuit is disclosed which generates and applies a fault signal to a digital circuit under test. The fault insertion circuit includes fault insertion hardware connected to the digital circuit under test. The fault insertion hardware is arranged to select, generate and apply the fault signal. A programmable controller and communication circuit are also included. The communication circuit is connected to the controller and to a data terminal, personal computer or any other source of programming commands and instructions. The communication circuit receives the programming commands and instructions from the data terminal and transmits the commands and instructions to the controller. The controller in response to the received commands and instructions transmits control signals to the fault insertion hardware, thereby, generating and applying a fault signal to the digital circuit under test.
