Abstract:

The present invention is directed to improving immunity to channel distortions of multiplexed analog component television signals by independently transmitting a clock recovery burst and a DC restoration reference level during the horizontal blanking interval of a video line. More particularly, the clock recovery burst and the DC restoration reference level are transmitted on independent lines. The integrity of the television receiver's system is not compromised if the clock recovery burst is not transmitted on every line. Accordingly, the problems inherent in the prior art are avoided by independently transmitting the clock recovery burst and the DC restoration reference level on separate lines during a portion of the horizontal blanking interval of the respective lines. The clock recovery burst and the DC restoration reference level could be transmitted on alternate lines or the clock recovery burst could be sent every Nth line with the DC restoration reference level transmitted on lines therebetween.

Abstract:

A widescreen television picture is sampled at a higher sampling rate so as to fit all of the information in the current 52. 5. mu. s active video line time. A selection signal is also incorporated with the widescreen picture signal, allowing non-widescreen television receivers to display a contiguous portion of the widescreen picture without geometric distortion. The widescreen television signal is transmitted either in MAC or widescreen NTSC format, and is received by a decoder. The decoder allows the entire widescreen picture to be displayed on a widescreen receiver, and makes use of the selection signal to display the selected portion of the picture on a standard receiver without geometric distortion. In another embodiment, a decoder allows television signals having the standard aspect ratio to be displayed on receivers having widescreen aspect ratios without geometric distortion.

Abstract:

A method of reformatting color television signals is disclosed whereby chrominance and luminance components are serially arranged on a line by line basis with minimal compression of the luminance and chrominance components. This reduced compression serial arrangement is made possible by a truncation process whereby unnecessary information is eliminated from the television signal. Specifically, since a normal television picture tube overscans, the edges of the picture are never displayed and need not be transmitted or recorded. By eliminating this unnecessary information the signals can be serially combined within the time limits inherent in standard signals.
