Abstract:

Embodiments of modelling a fluid treatment system are provided herein. One embodiment comprises obtaining synthetic data for a fluid treatment system from a data store. The fluid treatment system comprises a membrane and the fluid treatment system is configured to receive a stream of fluid for treatment. The embodiment comprises training a machine learning pressure prediction model using the synthetic data to predict a pressure for the membrane of the fluid treatment system. The trained pressure prediction model is combinable with an operator training simulator (OTS) model to update the OTS model to improve accuracy of simulation pressure output from the OTS model.

Abstract:

Various embodiments include a mechanical amplification mechanism in a compact power unit of an electricity generator containing at least one piezoelectric element. The power units can be used singly but are also designed to be stacked, serially and/or in parallel with each other, and to be mounted within or under a substrate (e.g., a roadway or aircraft runway) such that the system achieves ultra-high-density of electricity production per unit area. Embodiments of the disclosed subject matter are therefore directed to a mechanical-to-electrical power generator, an accompanying power electronic-circuit, and power transmission and/or power saving into an energy-storage device. Therefore, the generated electrical power can be conditioned for, for example, transmitting to an electrical grid or for charging batteries of electrical vehicles. Other methods of formation of the power units and related systems are disclosed.

Abstract:

A method for treating water high in sulfate includes passing the water at a temperature of 10 C. to 45 C. through a nanofiltration membrane module and a reverse osmosis membrane module in series such that the retentate stream from the nanofiltration membrane module is fed to the reverse osmosis membrane module. A first permeate stream from the nanofiltration membrane module has at least 90% lower sulfate content than the feed stream. A second permeate stream from the reverse osmosis membrane module has at least 95% lower sulfate content than the retentate stream from the nanofiltration membrane module. The first and second permeate streams are combined to form a treated stream containing less than 40 ppm sulfate. A system including the nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membrane modules in series is also disclosed.

Abstract:

Aspects of the subject technology relate to electronic devices with displays. The display includes an array of display pixels and one or more display-light sensors that monitor the display light generated by the display pixels. Using the display-light sensors, corrections to control signals for the display pixels can be provided to correct for array non-uniformities and/or pixel degradation over time. The display-light sensors may be provided in an array of display-light sensors mounted parallel to the array of display pixels. The array of display-light sensors can be in-plane with the display pixels or vertically displaced from the display pixels. The display-light sensors may be prevented from receiving non-display light such as ambient light.

Abstract:

A personnel management system and method is disclosed. The personnel management system comprises beacons distributed around an employer facility to assist in tracking employee movement, automating punch-in and punch-out events, automating timecard record keeping, and providing navigation services within the employer facility. Detection of an employee in proximity to a particular beacon triggers a server system to log the time of the detection and update of the employee's timecard with a punch-in event, if confirmed by the employee. Similarly, detection of the employee later triggers the server system to log the time of the detection and update of the employee's timecard with a punch-out event. In some embodiments, the beacons interact with employee mobile phones via a BLUETOOTH protocol. Automation of these operations improves the accuracy and convenience of employee timekeeping while preventing some types of fraudulent behavior, thereby saving employers money.

Abstract:

Produced water from a crude oil or natural gas production process is purified using a membrane purification system for petroleum production, agricultural, commercial and domestic uses. The produced water is pretreated to remove, at least, particulates and oil from the produced water. The minimally pretreated water is then purified in a membrane purification system, that is operated at conditions such that membrane scaling is reduced or prevented. In particular, the membrane purification system is operated to maintain the turbidity of clarified water feed to the system or intermediate aqueous streams that are cascading through the membrane purification system. Ensuring that the turbidity of the reject streams generated in the membrane system are useful in achieving long membrane operating life.

The lubricating composition provides improvements in terms of reduced friction and wear, in addition to improved fuel economy performance.

Abstract:

A method and system for inducing secondary orthogonal fractures in an underground formation by introducing a proppant carrying fluid into a hydraulic fracture in an underground formation at high pressure is provided. The pressure of the proppant carrying fluid is lowered at a rate allowing the fluid to exit the formation while the proppant remains in place within the fractures. The pressure of the fluid is then rapidly reduced, creating fractures orthogonal to the surface of existing fractures by pushing remained proppant against hydraulic fractures walls. The orthogonal fractures can be opened with high pressure fluid and propped. In this way, the portion of the formation in fluid flow communication with the wellbore is increased.
