Abstract:

A sensor diagnostic system comprises first, second, and third dosing agent sensors and a control module. The first, second, and third dosing agent sensors indicate whether a dosing agent is present at first, second, and third volumetric levels of a dosing agent tank, respectively. The second volumetric level is greater than the first volumetric level and the third volumetric level is greater than the second volumetric level. The control module selectively diagnoses a sensor fault in at least one of the first, second, and third dosing agent sensors based on the indications of the first, second, and third dosing agent sensors.

Abstract:

An exhaust diagnostic system includes a selective catalyst reduction (SCR) efficiency testing module that determines an efficiency of a SCR catalyst. An exhaust gas temperature management module selectively adjusts a temperature of the SCR catalyst to a predetermined temperature range using intrusive exhaust gas temperature management. A test enabling module initiates an SCR efficiency test using the SCR efficiency module after failing a prior SCR efficiency test and while the temperature of the SCR catalyst is within the predetermined temperature range.

A method and control system for a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalytic converter and an ammonia dosing module that stores ammonia in a selective catalyst reducing (SCR) catalyst and that depletes the ammonia level by discontinuing or reducing dosing. The control system also includes an SCR conversion efficiency module that determines an SCR efficiency. An SCR efficiency comparison module compares the SCR efficiency to an efficiency threshold and generates a fault indicator when the SCR efficiency is not above the efficiency threshold.

Abstract:

A vehicle includes an engine, a regenerable exhaust stream particulate filter, and a host machine. The host machine has a pair of soot models providing respective actual and modeled soot mass values for the soot contained in the particulate filter, calculates a ratio of a change in the actual and modeled soot masses, and executes a control action when the ratio exceeds a calibrated threshold. A diagnostic code and/or activation of an indicator device may be part of the control action. A system includes the particulate filter and host machine noted above. A method for use aboard the vehicle includes determining the actual and modeled soot mass values using first and second soot models, respectively, calculating a ratio of a change in the actual and modeled soot mass, comparing the ratio to a calibrated threshold, and executing a control action when the ratio exceeds the threshold.

Abstract:

A method of assessing non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) conversion efficiency in a diesel after-treatment (AT) system having a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) arranged upstream of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) includes regenerating the AT system. Additionally, the method monitors DOC inlet and outlet temperatures during the regeneration. The method also assesses whether the DOC is operating at or above threshold efficiency by determining a DOC inlet/outlet temperature difference and comparing the determined inlet/outlet temperature difference with a threshold inlet/outlet temperature difference. The method also monitors DPF outlet temperature if the DOC is operating at or above the threshold efficiency and determines a DOC temperature/DPF outlet temperature difference. The method additionally assesses whether NMHC conversion efficiency of the DPF is at or above a threshold value by comparing the determined DOC temperature/DPF outlet temperature difference with a threshold DOC temperature/DPF outlet temperature difference. A system and a vehicle are also disclosed.

Abstract:

Methods of utilizing engine crankshaft acceleration to monitor cold start spark retard are presented. A first method utilizes a variance in a crankshaft acceleration based deviation signal and looks for changes in the variance to confirm if cold spark retard has occurred by the ignition system. In a second method, a threshold level of a group of cylinder crankshaft acceleration deviation signals , can be detected and compared to a level of crankshaft deviant acceleration when normal spark is commanded to determine if commanded spark retard has been realized.
