Abstract:
Passive matrix and active matrix organic electroluminescent (EL) devices are fabricated by using a single mask which defines a deposition zone for depositing an organic EL medium layer and a cathode by directing respective vapor streams towards a substrate in the deposition zone. Electrically insulative organic shadowing structures are formed over cathode connectors for providing electrical contact between a cathode and a cathode connector in a position where the organic EL medium layer is spaced from a base of a shadowing structure. The electrical contact is achieved by directing an organic EL materials vapor stream towards the substrate in a direction substantially perpendicular to the substrate, and by directing a cathode materials vapor stream towards the substrate under a subtended angle.

Abstract:
A full-color active matrix organic light-emitting color display panel is disclosed which has an integrated shadow mask structure for patterning arrays of color subpixels. The in-situ shadow mask structure is prepatterned on the display substrate by conventional photolithography, and provides a simple, self-alignment feature for successive deposition of color organic electroluminescent (EL) media on designated color subpixel areas. The pillar structure of the shadow mask are particularly effective in the fabrication of high-resolution full-color organic light-emitting diode displays having either color conversion layers or individual red, green, and blue emissive layers.

Organic Electroluminescent Devices With Improved Stability And Efficiency
An organic luminescent layer for use in an electroluminescent device with improved operating life includes an organic host material capable of sustaining both hole and electron injection and recombination. The layer also includes at least two dopants: a first dopant capable of accepting energy of electron-hole combinations in the host material; and a second dopant capable of trapping the holes from the host material. The first dopant being selected so that the bandgap energy of the first dopant is less than the bandgap energy of the host material and the second dopant being selected to have a hole trapping energy level above the valance band of the host material.
