Abstract:

An approach is described for maintaining multiple presence objects associated with a single entity. The different presence objects correspond to different respective aspects of the entity's presence. Each presence object includes subscriber information and permission information associated therewith. The subscriber information identifies the subscribers that subscribe to receive notifications for a particular presence object. The permission information identifies the users who are entitled to receive notifications for the particular presence object. By virtue of the use of multiple objects, the entity can control access to its presence information with a high degree of granularity.

Abstract:

Processes and techniques for reducing spam over instant messaging (SPIM) are described. In one implementation, the number of open instant messaging threads (“chat threads”) that a specific user can have at a given time is limited to prevent a potential spimmer from flooding instant messaging users with SPIM. Another implementation combines the technique of limiting the number of open instant messaging threads with a user feedback technique that enables users to inform an instant messaging service or other entity about users that are sending SPIM or other undesirable content. Another implementation combines the technique of limiting the number of open instant messaging threads with a text analysis technique that enables an instant messaging service or other entity to analyze text generated by a user to determine if the user is sending SPIM or other undesirable content to other instant messaging users.

Abstract:

Computer-storage media, systems, and methods for facilitating development of web pages with cross-communicating tags are provided. The libraries and controls do not require a page transition or refresh operation to update information or instantiate features because the tags subscribe to a server for the information supplied to them. The update information can be requested by a first set of tags or pushed by a second set of tags. A package available online to developers includes development components for execution as part of a web page. These applications utilize APIs and a set of tags that are at least a portion of a markup language library. The tags are for initiating and executing web features, including instant messaging features. There is a developer interface to code the web page with the web application.
