Should be held in contempt of court for telling Mortons trial judge that he held no evidence favorable to Morton and for failing to comply with the judges order to turn over all reports and notes from the deputy in charge of investigating Christine Mortons murder.
The San Angelo jury took about three and a half hours to convict 58-year-old Mark Norwood, who received a life sentence for the 1986 killing of Christine Morton in Williamson County. Norwood stood quietly Wednesday as the verdict was read and would not speak to reporters as deputies rolled his wheelJudge Burt Carnes allowed testimony about the Baker case during Norwoods trial because he agreed with prosecutor Lisa Tanner that evidence in Bakers and Christine Mortons deaths was so similar: Both women were killed by blows to their heads as they slept.ouis Sonny Wann of Nashville lied in a videotaped deposition when Wann said that a gun he turned over to investigators in 2011 had been sold to him by Norwood. Authorities said the gun had been stolen from the Mortons southwestern Williamson County house the day Christine Morton died on Aug. 13, 1 evidence that led to the overturning of Michael Mortons prior conviction: a bloody bandanna found by Mortons brother-in-law, John Kirkpatrick, behind the Mortons house. The bandanna had Norwoods DNA on it, as well as small bloodstains from Christine Morton and a hair belonging to her.

Mark Norwood found guilty of 1986 murder of Christine Morton
5:30 a.m. Aug. 13, 1986, prosecutor Adrienne McFarland told jurors. Norwood then jumped the Mortons backyard fence and entered their living room through an open sliding glass door and proceeded to kill Christine Morton in her bed by hitting her on the head with an unknown object, McFarland said.Defense lawyer Ariel Payan gave a different scenario of what happened the day Christine Morton died. He said in closing arguments a neighbor reported seeing a black van parked next door to the Mortons house that morning. He also suggested that the killer went in through the front door because the MPayan also suggested that the evidence gathered from the bandanna was contaminated. He said Kirkpatrick had walked into Christine Mortons bedroom which was covered in blood before Kirkpatrick found the bandanna.

Closing arguments in Norwood's trial start Wednesday
Although Norwood is on trial in the beating death of Christine Morton in southwestern Williamson County in 1986, Judge Burt Carnes allowed the prosecution to also present evidence about the beating death of Debra Masters Baker in her Austin home in 1988 because of similarities in the two cases. The Morton case has drawn national attention because Christine Mortons husband, Michael Morton, was wrongfully convicted of her death and spent 25 years in prison before he was exonerated by DNA evidence. Because of the publicity, the case was moved from Williamson County to the Tom Green CourthousOther defense witnesses Tuesday included the ex-wife and daughter of Louis Sonny Wann. Wann, who lives in Nashville, Tenn., and was too ill to come to the trial, told police that Norwood sold him the gun stolen from the Mortons house when Christine Morton was killed Aug. 13, 1986.
