Abstract:

A method is provided for allowing the transmission of digital video segments along a number of transmission channels, with the line speed, or rate of transmission in bits per second, being variable during a transmission. For each transmission channel, video data segments are stored in a data buffer, along with data segments known as Write Control Blocks (WCBs). Each WCB includes a pointer to the video data segment with which it is associated and a line speed code indicating the preferred rate of data transmission. The addresses of the WCBs are stored in a FIFO buffer which is established for each transmission channel. When coded information within a WCB indicates that a speed change is needed, a run-time subroutine executing in a co-processor sets bits within a channel control word forming a portion of each WCB to stop a DMA process and to issue an interrupt when the corresponding video segment is to be transmitted. An interrupt handler determines the new line speed and sets a variable speed clock accordingly.

Abstract:

A method for communicating between two, or more, devices comprises the steps of (1) allocating, in a receiving device, a plurality of input buffers linked in a circular queue for continuous reading of data; (2) setting up a timer for determining the end of received data streams; (3) receiving a variable-length bit stream comprising data; synchronization of data; (5) determining whether data is being received upon expiration of the timer; (6) resynchronizing for a subsequent bit stream if not receiving data in step (5); (7) checking one of the plurality of input buffers for idle patterns if data is being received in step (5); (8) restarting the timer and returning to step (4), when idle patterns are not detected in step (7); and (9) disabling the receiver and resynchronizing and returning to step (4), when idle patterns are received in step (7).

A media streamer (10) includes at least one storage node (16, 17) for storing a digital representation of a video presentation. The Video presentation requires a time T to present in its entirety, and is stored as a plurality of N data blocks, each data block storing data corresponding approximately to a T/N period of the video presentation. The media streamer further includes a plurality of communication nodes (14) each having at least one input port and at least one output port; a circuit switch (18) connected between the at least one storage node and input ports of the plurality of communication nodes, the circuit switch selectively coupling one or more of the input ports to the at least one storage node to enable the digital representation stored thereat to appear at one or more of the output ports; and at least one control node (18) coupled at least to the plurality of communication nodes and to the at least one storage node for enabling any one of the N blocks to appear at any output port of any of the plurality of communication nodes.

Abstract:

A method and system are disclosed to enable an FLM designated as an owner, in a group of frames having redundant FLMs per frame, to ensure that an unresponsive “active” uplink is disabled, prior to allowing another uplink in the frame to become the active uplink. A group of frames, configured in a ring network topology, may only have a single uplink at a time. Otherwise, two or more concurrent active uplinks may cause a network loop that may result in total network failure (e.g., network crash). The disclosed method utilizes a coordination between an FLM owner on the ring and the neighbor FLM, in the same frame as the non-responsive FLM, to disable the active uplink, prior to transitioning to a new active uplink for the group of frames.

Abstract:

Systems and methods address automated ring owner selection for a ring topology network. A new ring owner may be selected based on failure of a current ring owner. The new ring owner may assume a ring ownership role by a) detecting a missing Ownership Select Message (OSM); b) detecting missing Continuity Check Protocol (CCP) messages; and c) determining that the current ring owner is an adjacent network module connected via an external link of a management network. A signal fail (SF) condition may also be present. Upon detection of adequate role changing conditions, a new ring owner may assume a ring ownership role, transmit an OSM and possibly select a new active uplink.

Abstract:

Detecting a foreign device is connected between what are expected to be directly connected network modules may present a network security concern. Disclosed is a protocol and method for detecting that an unexpected (i.e., foreign) device is in an unexpected location in a network path. For example, connected between two network nodes that are expected to be directly connected to each other. Scalable compute resources may rely on direct network connectivity to provide high availability, throughput, and security. Accordingly, determining a foreign device exists in the network path between two frame link modules (FLMs), for example, may address this need for security and reliability. A device connected to sniff network data may not advertise itself to the network and therefore may be actively detected using the disclosed methods.
