Abstract:

A system and method provide improved remote turbulence measurement. The system includes an image capturing device that captures time-lapse images of a distant target anywhere from a km to more than a 100 km away. A processor of the system tracks relative motion due to atmospheric turbulence of some number of patches of definite size on each of these images using a subpixel accurate correlation technique. The processor computes differential tilt variances between every pair of patches from the image collection and evaluates the theoretical weighting functions between turbulence along the path and differential tilt variances. The processor determines weights to linearly combine the weighting functions such that the combined weighting function closely resembles the weighting function corresponding to a turbulence parameter of interest. The processor then combines the differential tilt variances using the determined weights to obtain the desired turbulence parameter.

Abstract:

A system and method provide improved remote turbulence measurement. The system includes an image capturing device that captures frames of images of a target. A controller of the system tracks motion of one or more features of the images between frames using a pattern recognition algorithm. The controller computes subpixel motion based on results of the pattern recognition algorithm and computes differential motion or tilts between pairs of features. The controller computes differential tilt variances from every set of frames. The controller computes theoretical weighting functions for differential tilt variances. The controller determines weights to linearly combine weighting functions such that the combined weighting function closely resembles a desired weighting function that corresponds to the turbulence parameter of interest. The controller linearly combines the differential tilt variances using the determined weights to obtain the turbulence parameter of interest.

Abstract:

Methods for making a tribological bearing wear surface for a compressor component are provided. Such methods involve semi-solid metal casting, where an admixture of solid lubricant particles and a metal alloy material is heated to melt the metal alloy material, while the lubricant particles remain in a solid phase. The alloy material and solid lubricant have substantially different densities. The metal alloy material may be a copper, iron, or aluminum alloy, for example. The method further comprises mixing and cooling the admixture to form a semi-solid slurry admixture. Next, the method comprises introducing the semi-solid slurry admixture into a die. Finally, the semi-solid slurry admixture in the die is solidified to form a solid component having the solid lubricant particles homogenously distributed within a metal alloy material matrix, thus forming a metal matrix composite. Compressor components made from such methods are also provided.
