Abstract:

An optical layer comprises a sheet of material having a surface. The surface comprises a plurality of optical elements. The optical elements are comprised of microscopic patterns in the surface that cooperate to produce an image. Each of the elements has a focal length. At least some of the focal lengths are significantly different from other focal lengths, such that some portions of the surface appear to be closer to a viewer than other portions of the surface.

Abstract:

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for managing task instances. The present invention includes receiving a task instance request with a unique task identifier and invoking an authorization function corresponding to the unique task identifier. The authorization function authorizes the task instance request and registers the unique task identifier if the unique task identifier is not currently registered. If the unique task identifier is currently registered, the authorization function performs a task-specific operation. In certain embodiments the present invention also includes a task repository for storing unique task identifiers and a task termination function for unregistering unique task identifiers.

Abstract:

Certain embodiments include a method of manufacturing a polymer sheet having surface relief features. In this method, a layer of pre-polymerized material is provided. A plurality of spatially separated locations on the curable material is exposed to ultraviolet light such that the material locally cures at those locations. The curable material is exposed again such that regions outside those locations are also cured. The curing produces the polymer sheet having the surface relief features; the relief features being at those locations.

Abstract:

A diamondlike carbon thin film protected hologram comprises an organic film deposited on a substrate and recorded to form a hologram, and a diamondlike carbon thin film deposited on the hologram, or first and second substrates having a diamondlike carbon thin film deposited thereon and an organic film having a holographic pattern recorded therein and sandwiched between the diamondlike carbon thin films of the first and second substrates. A method of fabricating a diamondlike carbon thin film protected hologram comprises forming a layer of dichromated gelatin on a substrate, recording the dichromated gelatin to form a hologram, and depositing on the hologram a diamondlike carbon thin film at room temperature, or depositing a diamondlike carbon thin film on first and second substrates, forming a layer of dichromated gelatin on the thin film of one of the substrates, recording the layer to form a hologram, and adhering the thin film of the second substrate to the hologram. The diamondlike carbon thin film protected hologram of the present invention is impervious to moisture and humidity and other environmental conditions which would otherwise negatively affect the performance of the hologram.

An apparatus for recording Lippman holographic mirrors comprises an exposing volume optically coupled on one side with an index-matching fluid to the holographic material to be recorded. The volume is exposed on an adjacent side to a light beam expanded in one direction into a plane of light whose projection on the volume is a line. The line of light and the holographic material are moved relative to each other on an interrupted or a continuous basis to expose the holographic material.

Abstract:

A high finesse holographic Fabry-Perot etalon and method of making a high finesse holographic Fabry-Perot etalon is disclosed. Particularly, a holographic Fabry-Perot etalon which achieves high finesse despite non-flat interfaces between the etalon media is presented. In a preferred method of fabricating a high finesse Fabry-Perot etalon, single step recording of both holograms simultaneously, with the spacer and substrates in place, is employed which preserves full phase synchronization between the holograms. In spite of imperfections or irregularities of the interface surfaces of the substrates or spacers, the holographic fringes in the holograms remain flat even for slightly different refractive indices between the various media. The position and flatness of the fringes remains similar to perfect Fabry-Perot etalon structure.

Abstract:

A wavelength division multiplexer/demultiplexer having optical path lengths between a fiber array and a Fourier transform lens, and between a dispersion grating and the lens equal to the focal length of the lens. The equal optical path lengths reduce losses due to angular acceptance mismatch in the multiplexer. Close orientation of the fiber array about the optical axis and the use of a holographic dispersion grating reduces other losses in the system. Multi-exposure holographic dispersion gratings enable the multiplexer/demultiplexer for extremely broad-band simultaneous transmission and reflection operation. Individual Bragg plane sets recorded in the grating are dedicated to and operate efficiently on discrete wavelength ranges. A volume Bragg vertically non-uniform holographic grating enables operation of the multiplexer or other devices that act on light waves according to wavelength over nearly the full usable 0. 8-1. 3. mu. m wavelength range.
