Libya former energy minister Shatwan flees to Europe
On his visit to Libya, former US congressman Curt Weldon says he will urge Mr Gaddafi to "step aside", and is suggesting that his forces pull back from western cities under siege while rebel fighters do not try to advance any further from the east.
The complaints came amid diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. State Department officials acknowledged that a former U.S. House member from Pennsylvania, Curt Weldon (R), was in Tripoli on what was described as private trip to explore a possible peace deal.
Word of the letter comes as a former U.S. congressman arrived in Tripoli on what he calls a private mission to urge the Libyan leader to step down. Curt Weldon, a Pennsylvania Republican, says he was invited by Gadhafi.

NATO Escalates Campaign Over Libya as Rebels Criticize Mission
Curt Weldon, a former U.S. congressman, plans to meet Qaddafi today to persuade the Libyan leader to relinquish power, he wrote in a New York Times article. Weldon is leading a private delegation to Tripoli at the invitation of a Qaddafi aide.
A spokesman for Curt Weldon says he arrived in Tripoli on Wednesday after Gadhafi invited him. Weldon would be one of the few high-profile Westerners to meet with Gadhafi since the rebellion against his four-decade rule began in February.
