A composite transmission housing is provided with a die-cast metal base and an over-molded plastic body. The metal base provides mechanical strength for the transmission gears, while the plastic body forms a leak-free oil pan for the transmission oil. The method of making the composite transmission housing includes the steps of die-casting the metal base, inserting the base into a mold, and over-molding the plastic body onto the base.
An automatic washer includes an elongated shaft mounted to a motor for rotation about the longitudinal axis of the shaft. A fabric basket is rotatably mounted to the shaft and an agitator is attached to the shaft above the fabric basket. A clutch is positioned between the agitator and the fabric basket and is movable from a disengaged position wherein the agitator rotates independently of the basket to an engaged position wherein the agitator rotates in unison with the basket. The clutch is movable from its engaged position to its disengaged position in response to the rise of washing fluid within the washing basket.
Mounting Assembly For The Impeller Of A Fluid Pump
The impeller of a fluid pump contained within an impeller housing is axially located on the drive shaft of a motor by securing the impeller to a sleeve that is slidably keyed onto the end of a motor shaft with a seal spring disposed between the sleeve and impeller housing urging the sleeve and impeller against the drive shaft so that the end thrust force is provided by the motor shaft bearings.
An improved access top cover for a washing machine includes a top panel having a rear edge, first and second opposite side edges, and a front edge. The upper surface of the top panel includes a sloping surface commencing adjacent the front edge of the top panel and sloping upwardly and rearwardly toward the rear edge of the top panel. An access opening is provided in the top panel and a lip flange is positioned between the access opening and the front edge of the top panel. The lip flange forms a ridge which is located above both of the front edge of the top panel and the access opening.
Motor Driven Pump Assembly With A Protective Cover
A motor mounted pump assembly for use with an agitator-type clothes washing machine is disclosed which includes a pump, having an impeller located in a pump housing, mounted to a motor casing such that a drive shaft from the motor extends into the pump housing and drivingly engages the impeller. Interposed between the pump and motor is a cover member which is fixedly secured to the pump housing and which is intended to divert any leakage from the pump housing from coming into contact with the motor or any associated electrical components of the washing machine. By fixedly securing the cover member to the pump housing, the pump and cover member may be removed from the motor as a unitary piece in the event the pump needs to be replaced or repaired. Furthermore, at the connection points between the cover member and the pump housing, the cover member is formed with embossed areas which function to divert any fluid leaking from the pump housing away from these areas. Additional openings are provided in the cover member to permit mounting legs, formed integral with the pump housing, to be directly secured to the motor casing.
A drive system for producing agitation and spin in an automatic washing machine incorporates a transmission assembly including a plurality of interengaged transmission elements located within a transmission housing. During agitation, the transmission housing is braked and the transmission elements convert input rotary drive from a motor to oscillator drive of an output shaft. During spin, a cam member carried by one of the transmission elements automatically shifts a stop element into engagement with the transmission housing. This maintains the transmission elements in a predetermined orientation, prevents relative rotation between each of the transmission elements and the transmission housing and causes the entire transmission assembly to rotate in unison which results in rotation of the output shaft. Since the transmission elements are maintained in the same predetermined orientation during each spin, the entire transmission assembly can be effectively counterbalanced to minimize unbalancing of the system and reduce vibrations during operation.
