Abstract:A control device and system for an appliance and methods of making the same are provided, the control device having a control unit to energize the coil of a relay with a power source at substantially a desired lead point on the voltage wave cycle thereof so as to tend to cause the contacts of the relay to subsequently close substantially at a certain point on the voltage wave cycle each time a load is to be interconnected to the power source whereby a lag time period exists between the desired lead point and a certain point, the control unit having a sensing unit to sense the lag time by detecting when the coil current of the relay coil decreases momentarily by the contacts initially closing during that particular cycle of operation of the control device, the control unit having a unit to automatically adjust the desired lead point should the sensed lag time on a certain previous cycle of operation not cause the contacts to close substantially at the certain point in order to tend to cause the contacts to close substantially at the certain point during future cycles of operation, the sensing unit comprising an indicating transistor in the circuit that is initially turned on by current initially flowing to the relay coil before the contacts close during that particular cycle of operation and is turned off by the momentary decrease of coil current caused by the contacts initially closing during that particular cycle of operation.

Abstract:A temperature regulating control system for an oven of a cooking apparatus and methods of making and operating the same are provided, the system having a circuit for interconnecting a power source to a load of the apparatus in a regulated manner so as to tend to provide a selected temperature output of the load for the oven, the circuit comprising a microcomputer, external components, and a voltage regulator for providing a regulated voltage from the power source for operating the microcomputer so that the microcomputer can operate the external components, the circuit having a temperature sensing unit to sense the ambient temperature of a portion of the circuit and provide a warning signal to the microcomputer that a first high ambient temperature has been sensed so that the microcomputer can shut down the external components of the system in a controlled manner before a second higher ambient temperature is sensed by the temperature sensing unit.

Abstract:A membrane keyboard construction and method of making the same are provided, the membrane keyboard construction comprising two circuit layers, a spacer disposed and secured between the circuit layers and having an opening passing therethrough to permit the circuit layers to be pressed together in the opening and thereby provide a switching function, a face plate, and an adhesive layer disposed between the face plate and one of the circuit layers and securing the face plate to the one circuit layer, the adhesive layer having a passage therein and leading from an area thereof that is aligned in superimposed relation with the opening to the exterior of the construction to vent that area thereof. The area is isolated from the opening by the one circuit layer and is vented by the passage to tend to enhance tactile feel and avoid false switch closure of the opening by tending to prevent entrapment of air bubbles in the area.
