Abstract:

A retractor including: an extension member having distal and proximal ends; a retractor member connected to the distal end of the extension member, the retractor member having a retractor surface. In a first implementation, at least a portion of the retractor surface has a distal vacuum port for positively retaining the tissue upon application of a vacuum to the vacuum port. In an alternative implementation, the retractor has an illuminator for transmitting light into an interior of the body proximate to the tissue.

Abstract:

A suction device includes a suction cup having a vacuum inlet for connection to a vacuum source. The suction cup has a wall defining a cavity that is in fluid communication with the vacuum inlet and an engagement surface for engaging a tissue surface. The suction cup is formed of a material that minimizes injury to the tissue surface contacted by the engagement surface and tissue captured when the vacuum is applied and permits the captured tissue to be perfused during use of the suction device.

Abstract:

A system for detecting optically-sensitive properties of sheet materials during manufacture includes a first group of bundles of optical fibers that convey light to selected transmitting locations adjacent one face of the sheet material. The system further includes a second group of bundles of optical fibers that collect and convey light transmitted through the sheet material to a light detector. The light detector measures the intensity of light received from each of the bundles of the second group to provide measurements of optically-sensitive properties of the sheet material at selected cross-directional locations.

Disclosed is an apparatus for measuring on-line the color and color-related properties of a moving sheet. Contrast ratio reflectance measurements are made for providing opacity corrections substantially in real time for a full color spectrum. An optical color sensor in accordance with the invention includes a pair of synchronized spectrometers, the first spectrometer being aligned to view a region of the sheet backed with a highly reflective ("white") material and the second spectrometer being aligned to view a region of the sheet backed with a highly absorptive ("black") material. The use of two spectrometers permits substantially simultaneous "black" and "white" measurements for a full color spectrum. The optical color sensing system further includes two light sources, a flashlamp and a continuously energized tungsten filament lamp. The color sensor further includes a sheet backing system including a rotatable standard wheel carrying a white standard tile.

Abstract:

A battery electrode composition is provided that comprises composite particles. Each composite particle may comprise, for example, active lithium fluoride/metal nanocomposite material optionally embedded into a nanoporous, electrically-conductive skeleton matrix material particle(s), where each of these composite particles is further encased in a Li-ion permeable, chemically and mechanically robust, protective outer shell that is impermeable to electrolyte solvent molecules. The active lithium fluoride/metal nanocomposite material is provided to store and release Li ions during battery operation.
