Abstract:

Methods, systems, and articles of manufacture provide for wireless communications of brain signals from electrode implants to an external receiver for analysis of the brain signals. The analyzed brain signals are used to locate abnormal brain activity in a subject, such as epileptic seizure foci, or to localize task-specific brain activity.

Abstract:

A screw for use in stimulating bone growth, tissue healing and/or pain control. The screw includes an elongate shaft having a length extending between opposite ends, an exterior surface and a screw thread formed on the exterior surface of the shaft and extending along at least a portion of the length. The shaft has an electrically conducting portion and an electrically insulating portion. The screw also includes a head adjacent one end of the shaft for engaging the screw to rotate the screw and thereby drive it into bone. The screw includes an electrical conductor electrically connectable to the shaft for conveying current through the shaft to the bone through the conducting portion of the shaft.

Systems for treating a mood disorder in a patient includes implantable device(s) including one or more electrodes for sensing cortical signals and for stimulating one or more brain regions. Processor/controller(s) in communication with the electrode(s) receive and process cortical signals from electrode(s) and control the stimulating of brain region(s). The system includes portable communication device(s) operable by the patient and having software for acquiring ecological mood assessment (EMA) data representative of the patient's mood and communicating the EMA data to the processor/controller(s) and/or to at least one remote processor. Sensors may also be used to record patient data. The data is processed by the processor/controller(s), and/or by a processor of the portable communication device and/or by the remote processor(s) for modulating and/or controlling the stimulation the brain region(s) to treat the mood disorder. Abstract:

A method of using a catheter assembly for inserting in a fluid filled space in a body includes providing a main body having a first end portion and a second end portion. The first end portion is positioned within the fluid filled space. The second end portion is adjusted to extend outwardly from the fluid filled space when the first end portion is positioned within the fluid filled space. A catheter tip is connected to the second end portion of the main body. The catheter tip includes a housing having a cavity defined therein and a rotating element positioned within the fluid filled space. The rotating element is rotated within the cavity of the housing to impart movement of the first end portion of the main body within the fluid filled space.

Abstract:

An intra-calvarial implant (ICI) includes one or more electrodes for sensing electrical signals from a brain of a mammal and for electrically stimulating one or more regions of the brain. The electrode(s) are implanted between an outer table and an inner table of the calvarial bone without fully penetrating the inner table, at least one reference electrode, an electronic circuitry module operatively connected to the one or more electrode(s) and to the reference electrode and for controlling the sensing and the stimulating, for at least partially processing the sensed electrical signals to obtain data for storing the data and for wirelessly transmitting the data to an external receiver. The ICI also includes a power harvesting device suitably electrically connected to one or more components of the electronic circuitry module of the ICI for energizing one or more components of the ICI. Abstract:

Users of brain-computer interface (BCI) systems wear an electroencephalography (EEG) headset that places multiple electrodes in contact with the scalp of the user. The EEG headsets provided herein provide user convenience and EEG accuracy. For example, the positioning of the EEG electrodes is readily adjustable to provide a customizable fit with various head shapes and sizes, and to conveniently provide repeatable electrode-to-scalp contact. Further, EEG accuracy is improved by integrating electromagnetic shielding into the EEG headset to reduce electromagnetic interference.
