Abstract:

A well tool can include a well tool housing and a cooling section positioned within the well tool housing, the cooling section including a helical cooling fluid flow path, and the flow path having a reversal of direction proximate an end of the cooling section. Another well tool can include a cooling fluid which flows through the helical flow path toward the end of the cooling section in one direction, and which flows through the helical flow path away from the end of the cooling section in an opposite direction. Another well tool can include the cooling fluid which flows through the helical flow path, and which makes multiple passes longitudinally through the cooling section proximate a heat-sensitive device.

Abstract:

A mud pulse telemetry tool is used in a drill string that has a drilling fluid flowing inside. The mud pulse telemetry tool may include a pulser disposed in the drill string and a drive system for driving the pulser. The pulser may include a non-rotating mud pulse stator and a mud pulse rotor disposed proximate to the stator. The drive system may include a turbine stator, a turbine rotor, and a rotatable inertial member magnetically coupled to the turbine rotor. The inertial member may be operatively connected at a first end to the mud pulse rotor. In the mud pulse telemetry tool, rotational energy may be transmitted from the turbine rotor to the rotatable inertial member by a magnetic coupling. The rotatable inertial member may be operatively connected to a supplemental motor that is adapted to supplement rotational energy imparted to the rotatable inertial member by the drive system.

Abstract:

A method for forming a controllable bend angle in a drill string in a wellbore comprises attaching an upper housing to a drill string. At least, one drive motor is anchored in the upper housing. A middle housing is operably coupled to the at least one drive motor. A lower housing is operably coupled to the at least one drive motor. The at least one drive motor is controllably operated to rotate the middle housing by a first rotation angle with respect to the upper housing, and to rotate the lower housing by a second rotation angle with respect to the upper housing, to generate a desired bend angle between the middle housing and the lower housing at a target toolface orientation between the bend angle and the upper housing.

Abstract:

A directional drilling device for drilling a borehole having a borehole wall, the device including an outer housing and a driveshaft selectively rotatable with respect to the housing and including an axial flow bore and a through port formed in the driveshaft wall. The device also includes one or more borehole engagement members rotatable with and radially moveable with respect to the outer housing toward engagement with the borehole wall to urge the directional drilling device in a radial direction with respect to the borehole. The device further includes a mud pressure actuation system. The mud pressure actuation system controls fluid flow through the through port to control hydraulic pressure on a piston device and thus movement of the borehole engagement members into engagement with the borehole wall to maintain a rotational position of the outer housing and the corresponding radial direction in which the device is being urged.

Abstract:

A directional drilling device for drilling a wellbore having a wall, the device including an outer housing, a driveshaft located at least partially within and selectively rotatable with respect to the outer housing. The device also includes extendable members oveable to extend radially outwardly from the outer housing and so as to apply a force onto the wellbore wall and move the device off-center in the wellbore in a direction. The device further includes a hydraulic actuation system operable to control hydraulic fluid to extend and retract of the extendable members. The rotational orientation of the extendable members is controllable by rotation of the outer housing by the driveshaft and the rotational orientation of the extendable members and the outer housing and thus the direction may be maintained by extension of the extendable members into contact with the borehole to restrain the outer housing from rotating.

Abstract:

A Rotary Steerable System (RSS) includes a flexible collar coupled therein that reduces the stiffness of the RSS and permits a tighter turning radius to be achieved. The positioning of the flexible collar between the steering section and the controller of the RSS further improves the turning radius, and may permit a push-the-bit system to operate similar to a point-the bit system. The flexible collar permits communication therethrough between controller and the steering sections of the RSS. The RSS may be arranged as a modular system to receive various configurations of a flexible collar and may operate with no flexible collar installed. The modularity enables tuning of the stiffness of an RSS to achieve different steering objectives.

Abstract:

A system and method for determining drilling parameters based on hydraulic pressure associated with a directional drilling system are disclosed. A drilling parameter associated with a directional drilling system may be determined by measuring hydraulic pressure associated with the directional drilling system during drilling of a wellbore, detecting a change in the hydraulic pressure, and determining a drilling parameter based on the detected change in hydraulic pressure.
