Abstract:
An apparatus for pelletizing a feed material containing finely divided solids and water by compressing the feed material in the die cavities of a pellet mill and permitting excess water to escape from the material being compressed through at least one water escape opening in each die cavity.

Abstract:
A method of and apparatus for collecting samples from a flowing stream in which an elongated sampling device including inner and outer concentric, relatively rotatable tubular members is positioned in and extends across the stream. The tubular members each have a longitudinally extending slot at least as long as the transverse width of the stream, with the slots being wider, and preferably at least about three times wider than the dimension of the largest particles contained in the stream. To take a sample, the inner tubular member is rotated to position its slot facing upstream, then the outer tubular member is rotated to position its slot in alignment with the slot in the inner tubular member to permit material from the stream to flow into the inner tubular simultaneously across the full width of the stream. When samples are not being taken, at least the outer tubular member is rotated to so that its slot faces downstream.
Apparatus For Collecting Slurry Samples From A Pipe
A sampling device for obtaining a full stream cut of a slurry flowing in a pipe has a body connected in a section of pipe, with a first bore through the body forming a continuation of the pipe, and a second bore intersecting the first and supporting a cylinder for rotary and/or axial movement between first and second positions. The cylinder has a transverse bore which, in the first position is aligned with and forms a continuation of the flow path. When the cylinder is moved to the second position, the material in the transverse bore is captured and drained as a full stream cut sample. The cylinder may be quickly returned to the first position to permit continued flow through the pipe, or a second transverse bore in the cylinder may provide substantially continuous flow.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for monitoring the flow of bulk material in a bulk materials handling system is disclosed. A critical stage in the system is identified in which variations in flowability of the material might result in the entire system flow being impeded. Upstream from that critical stage, flow conditions in the critical stage are simulated so that the flow can be interrupted if unsatisfactory flowability conditions exist. A pivotable chute may be positioned at an angle to simulate the flow of particular materials at critical downstream points in a material handling system. If material conditions such as excess moisture impede the rate of flow of the material to a degree which would cause blockages in critical downstream points, the chute will pivot to a secondary position which will temporarily interrupt the material flow.

Abstract:
An improved process for removing mercury and other trace elements from coal containing pyrite by forming a slurry of finely divided coal in a liquid solvent capable of forming ions or radicals having a tendency to react with constituents of pyrite or to attack the bond between pyrite and coal and/or to react with mercury to form mercury vapors, and heating the slurry in a closed container to a temperature of at least about 50. degree. C. to produce vapors of the solvent and withdrawing vapors including solvent and mercury-containing vapors from the closed container, then separating mercury from the vapors withdrawn.

Abstract:
Disclosed is a pelletized fuel composition comprising coal fines in an amount of from 60% to 80% by weight, paper making sludge in an amount of from 10% to 30% by weight, and a shredded polymeric material in an amount of from 0. 5% to 15% by weight. Surprisingly and unexpectantly, a high percentage of correctly sized pellets having a desired degree of hardness and structural integrity result without the necessity of a binder, the use of very high pressures or drying the completed pellets by heating at elevated temperatures. A method of manufacturing the fuel composition involving pelletizing at a pressure of from about 1,000 psig to about 4,000 psig is also disclosed.
