    A digital cordless telephone system using lossless pulse code modulation (PCM) for encoding an audio signal. By using an efficiently implemented and uncompressed encoding scheme, the system substantially reduces implementation costs and improves the quality of transmission for white signals such as modem signals. A transceiver implementation includes a PCM coder, an RF transmitter, an RF receiver, and a PCM decoder. Also presented is a method for communicating an audio signal from a transmitter unit to a remote receiver unit. The method includes steps of sampling an audio signal into a PCM data stream, modulating the PCM data stream onto a carrier, transmitting the carrier, receiving the carrier, demodulating the PCM data stream from the carrier, and generating a reconstructed audio signal from the PCM data stream.

    Presented is a telephone calling party announcement system which stores telephone numbers and associated voice messages provided by a user. When an incoming telephone call occurs, and a telephone number of a calling party matches a stored telephone number, an associated stored voice message is played back. Calling party information is provided by Caller ID information transmitted between a first and a second ring signal. If a stored telephone number matches the telephone number portion of the Caller ID information, a stored voice message associated with the telephone number is played back between (or in place of) subsequent ring signals. The stored voice message is typically the name of the calling party, and in this case the name of the calling party is announced between ring signals. A first embodiment includes a voice message unit which receives, stores, and plays back voice messages provided by the user. A caller ID decoder decodes the Caller ID information and provides the decoded Caller ID information to a control unit.

    The present invention comprises a telephone system and method that identify and announce the caller and/or the callee of an incoming telephone call.     A telephone that communicates high-quality audio signals and a method for communicating an audio signal with an extended frequency range over a telephone network.     A system-on-a-chip with a variable clock rate bus. The integrated circuit includes at least one bus, a clock, a plurality of modules coupled to the bus and operable to transfer and receive data on the bus, and a bus controller coupled to the bus that controls data transfers on the bus.     The present invention comprises an improved telephone system and method that reduce call interruptions to a telephone, i. e. , reduce interruptions caused by a caller placing a call to the telephone. If the no-call feature is enabled and a call is received by the telephone, the telephone answers the incoming telephone call in response to receiving the telephone call. The telephone then plays a message to the caller indicating that no calls are being taken. The telephone plays the message after the telephone answers the incoming telephone call. The telephone does not generate an audible ring signal in response to the telephone call received from the caller. The telephone system further comprises an exemption logic unit for allowing calls placed by certain callers to come through even when the no-call feature is enabled. The user indicates the exception parties to the no-call feature prior to receiving a call from an external party or at a later time. If the caller is determined to be an exception party after a telephone call is received, a ring signal is generated, and the user may then answer the call in a normal fashion.

    The present invention comprises an improved telephone system and method that determine the identity of the callee of an incoming telephone call. A distinctive ring is selected by one or more of the users of the telephone prior to activating the feature or at a later time. Information about the individual distinctive ring signals is stored in memory inside the telephone. When an incoming call is received from an external party, the telephone determines which one of the users is the callee of the telephone call. A distinctive ring signal is then generated corresponding to the identified callee of the incoming telephone call. The distinctive ring signal identifies the callee of the incoming telephone call to the telephone users. In order to identify the callee of the incoming telephone call, the telephone system, after answering the incoming telephone call, inquires the caller for the identity of the callee. In another embodiment, a callee is identified using voice recognition techniques.
