Abstract:

A catheter apparatus includes a lesion dilating member disposable at a lesion position in a vessel (e. g. a patients artery) which is dilatable to open the vessel at the lesion position. An emboli-capturing assembly having a perfusion member and filter is displaced downstream from the lesion dilating member to capture embolic debris released in the fluid flow. The perfusion member may illustratively have peaks and channels formed between adjacent peaks which cooperate with the filter to create trapping pockets that capture embolic debris. The filter may be made from any flexible and porous material with dimensions to pass the fluid and block the emboli. The perfusion member is thereafter deflated to provide for emboli retention in the perfusion member.

Abstract:

A guidewire which has a tubular member, a flexible distal tip secured to the distal end of the tubular member and an exchangeable elongated core member disposed within the lumen of the tubular member. The elongated core member can be advanced distally to the distal end of the tubular member or withdrawn proximally out of the tubular member proximal end. While the guidewire is inside a patient's vessel, the elongated core member can be removed from the tubular member and exchanged for a different elongated support. By exchanging the elongated core member, the physician is able to change guidewire characteristics, such as flexibility or shape, to facilitate movement of the guidewire within the patient's lumen.

Abstract:

A device for detecting partial restriction in a fluid line connecting a fluid source with an IV infusion pump comprises a gauge mounted on the pump and operatively associated with the line to determine fluid pressure therein. The pump also comprises a peristable finger to conditionally occlude the line and a miroprocessor, upon occlusion of the line, to establish fluid pressure parameters within which the indication is that there is no partial restriction in the line. The pump also uses the microprocessor to compare actual pressure measured by the gauge during an occlusion with the established parameters to determine whether pump operation is to be continued.

Abstract:

A method for testing for patency at a venous access site during intravenous infusion of a medical solution includes the steps of occluding an intravenous injection tube upstream from the venous access site and monitoring the time and fluid pressure within the tube while the fluid pressure within the tube is varied by external contact with the tube. An apparatus for practicing the method of the invention includes a housing formed with a tube receiving portion for holding a portion of the tube in contact with an occluder finger, a fluid moving finger and a pressure transducer. The fluid moving finger is adapted to contact the tube so as to achieve a testing base pressure in the fluid, after occlusion by the occluder finger. A sequence of pressure drops are then effected by moving the fluid moving finger in stepped increments. An excessive time interval between a pressure drop and a recovery of fluid pressure back to the testing base pressure is an indication of an infiltration condition or some other obstruction.

Abstract:

A peristaltic pump for infusing medical solutions to a patient through a flexible tube comprises a pair of counter-rotating drive shafts mounted on a base. A separate roller is eccentrically mounted on each of the drive shafts and each roller has a wheel which is slidingly suspended at its periphery. A pair of curvilinear platens are each separately disposed concentric with a respective drive shaft to engage the tube between the wheel on each roller and the platen. Cooperative counterrotation of the drive shafts cause each roller to sequentially squeeze the tube against its respective platen to create a moving zone of occlusion along the tube.

Abstract:

A linear peristaltic pump includes a mechanism for maintaining linear flow of fluid through an I. V. tube. The mechanism comprises a casing carrying a rotatable camshaft having a plurality of cams spaced therealong in helical arrangement and a plurality of fingers coupled to the camshaft. A housing for establishing linear reciprocal movement of the fingers in response to rotation of the shaft establishes a moving zone of occlusion along a tube held against the fingers. Aligning means are included for establishing an axis of rotation of the camshaft which is slightly tilted with respect to the tube. This is accomplished by raising or lowering the upstream or the downstream end of the camshaft to prevent unwanted pressure from building up in the tube to reduce pulsatile flow and maintain linear flow. The aligning mechanism comprises a generally cylindrical bushing having an eccentric hole therethrough for carrying the hinged connection between the casing and the housing. The bushing has a slot therethrough for adjustably rotating the bushing for adjusting the amount of tilt.
