Abstract:

A dispersion comprising fine porous inorganic oxide particles, e. g. , silica gel particles, wherein the particles have a median particle size below three microns. The dispersed particles have a porosity after drying in which at least about 0. 50 cc/g of pore volume is from pores having a pore size of 600 or less as determined by nitrogen porosimetry. Embodiments prepared from silica gel have porosity after drying in which at least about 0. 7 cc/g of pore volume is from pores having a diameter of 600 or smaller. The particles of the dispersion also can be described as having viscosity derived pore volume of at least about 0. 5 g/cc. The dispersion is prepared by forming a dispersion from inorganic oxides having sufficient rigid structure to maintain porosity after milling and drying. After the inorganic oxide is selected, it is milled to have a median particle size of 0. 05 to about 3 microns.

Abstract:

The coating composition comprises inorganic oxide, e. g. , silica, in combination with a binder system comprising a mixture of a water soluble polymer and non-ionic latex polymer. The composition may contain optional dye mordant (e. g. , cationic polymer). It is found that the combinations of these components result in relatively high solids formulations (e. g. , greater than 20% by weight) with relatively low viscosity (less than 5000 centipose), do not exhibit coating dusting, and give exceptional ink-jet printability. These formulations are especially suitable for preparing on-line formulations because they can be formulated to have a viscosity less than 2000 centipose. Preferable embodiments for online coatings have a viscosity less than 1000 centipose.

Abstract:

The present invention is directed to compositions and processes for the production of stable, alkaline, high solids, low viscosity, low surface tension, low flammability, sub-micron titania sols that have minimal offensive odor and methods of their use. Compositions of the present invention include, for example, mixtures of strong and weak organic bases used as dispersants to stabilize the titania sols. The dispersant mixtures have been found to result in relatively high titania solids content, low surface tension, low viscosity suspensions that are low in flammability. Sols produced according to the present invention can be used, for example, in catalytic applications such as catalyst supports for diesel emission control, or in pollutant photocatalyst applications in which it is desirable to have the titania in sol form.

Abstract:

An apparatus and method for treating diesel exhaust gases are described. The system consists of two functionalities, the first being a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst system and the second being a capture material for capturing catalyst components that have appreciable volatility under extreme exposure conditions. The SCR catalyst component is typically based on a majority phase of titania, with added minority-phase catalyst components comprising of one or more of the oxides of vanadium, silicon, tungsten, molybdenum, iron, cerium, phosphorous, copper and/or manganese vanadia. The capture material typically comprises a majority phase of high surface area oxides such as silica-stabilized titania, alumina, or stabilized alumina, for example, wherein the capture material maintains a low total fractional monolayer coverage of minority phase oxides for the duration of the extreme exposure. The method involves treatment of hot exhaust streams by both the catalyst material and capture material, wherein the capture material can be in a mixture with the catalyst material, or can be located downstream thereof, or both, but still be maintained at the extreme temperatures. Volatile catalyst components such as vanadia are thus removed from the vapor phase of the exhaust gas.
