Abstract:
The present invention is an efficient and economical battery sealing and supporting device and method. Among a variety of possible applications, the present invention may be utilized as an improved device and method that facilitates the use of cochlear stimulators designed to allow deaf and near deaf patients to experience the sensation of sound waves through electromechanical stimulation. The present invention eliminates the introduction of sweat, body fluid and other contaminants to the battery terminal connection area, which results in corrosion and eventually disables the connected device. Given its broad scope, the technology associated with the present invention is useful in medical and other areas, such as in military applications, hand-held computer and Internet systems and personal entertainment devices.

Abstract:
A feedthrough is insulated and hermetically sealed by brazing a ceramic disk to a case cover and by brazing the top surface of the ceramic disk to the bottom surface of a feedthrough pinhead. Using this technique instead of forming a compression seal, the surface area for bonding is increased, increasing bond strength. The ceramic disk electrically insulates the feedthrough pin from the cover, and provides a large surface area for mechanically sealing the cell with the braze. Considering the small size of many cells, this increased surface area is important for getting a good seal and increasing bond strength. This design also creates a longer fluid path, providing greater hermeticity. Furthermore, a greater range of component material combinations is available because CTE compatibility limitations of the feedthrough pin, cover, and insulator are minimized. This feedthrough is applicable to broad array of applications and numerous material combinations.
An electrode system includes one or more separator materials formed into a bag having at least two seams. The seams are positioned so as to define the perimeter of a pocket configured to receive an electrode within the bag. At least one gap is formed between seams adjacent to one another along the perimeter of the pocket. Additionally, at least one of the seams includes a spacer positioned between portions of the one or more separator materials joined by the at least one seam.
A feedthrough assembly and method for a battery includes a corrosion-prone pin coupled to a corrosion-resistant current collector and protected from the battery electrolyte by a protective covering. The current collector is connected to the battery electrode without danger of exposing the pin to the electrolyte.
Disclosed is a positive electrode () comprising: a foil substrate (); and a slurry coated on both faces, wherein the coating () comprises an active material comprising particles having an average diameter of greater than 1 μm to about 100 μm. Also disclosed is an electrode assembly and battery using, and a method for making, the positive electrode. Also disclosed is a method for making a negative electrode () comprising the acts of: providing a foil substrate (72); and laminating lithium foil () onto both faces, leaving a portion free of lithium. Also disclosed is a hermetically sealable electric storage battery and a manufacturing method for filling and sealing it.
