Abstract:The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing an interior trim panel assembly having an integrated soft-touch area for improved aesthetic trim component quality. The method of manufacturing a trim panel assembly for the interior of a vehicle having an integrated soft-touch area of the present invention includes placing a molded trim panel including a coverstock having an exposed outer surface and a foam backing disposed opposite the outer surface and a rigid substrate having at least one aperture bonded to the coverstock into a mold cavity. The method of manufacture further includes separating the bonded coverstock and rigid polymer substrate in a localized area to define an internal chamber accessible by the aperture. The method of manufacture also includes injecting soft foam into the internal chamber through the aperture so as to be juxtaposed between the coverstock and the rigid polymer substrate in at least one predetermined location to define an integrated soft-touch area.

Abstract:A method of manufacturing a laminated vehicle trim panel includes initially positioning a flexible first material within a mold cavity of a first mold portion. A second mold portion for closing the cavity of the first mold portion is then provided. A second material is introduced into the mold cavity to form a substrate, such that the substrate and the first material form a laminated vehicle trim panel. A portion of the substrate between the outer peripheral edge of the substrate and a second portion of the substrate defines a brim. The brim has a mounting feature for attaching the laminated vehicle trim panel to a second panel.

Abstract:A door trim panel for a door frame of a motor vehicle. The door trim panel includes a main body portion adapted to be removably secured to the door frame and a bolster removably secured to the main body portion. The bolster covers an access opening in the main body portion. The bolster includes a substrate having a bolster portion integrally formed with an armrest portion. A cover is integrally molded with the substrate and includes a first portion overlying the bolster portion and having a first thickness, and a second portion overlying the armrest portion and having a second thickness greater than the first thickness to provide a softer feel. The bolster may be made in a two shot molding process with the substrate being formed in the first shot of the molding process and the multi-feel cover being formed in the second shot of the molding process.

Abstract:The present invention provides for an improved trim part, e. g. a bolster or trim plate, with integrated appliqué for use in a trim assembly, and to a continuous two-shot molding operation that may be performed utilizing a single mold assembly. Abstract:An automotive interior component including an electroluminescent lamp capable of emitting visible light. The electroluminescent lamp of the component may integrally molded with a polymer body to define a unitary assembly. The interior component may be, for example, a bolster mounted to a door trim panel for concealing an opening in the door panel. Abstract:The present invention provides for an improved bolster with a soft feel for use in a trim assembly, and to a continuous two-shot molding operation that may be continuously performed utilizing a single mold assembly. In an exemplary embodiment, the bolster includes a substrate formed by co-injecting a first and second material into a first shot mold cavity in a first shot of a molding operation. In a second shot mold cavity, a cover is formed on at least a portion of the substrate by co-injecting into a mold chamber a third and fourth material in a second shot of the molding operation. The fourth material defines an outer skin surrounding the third material which may include a foamed material to provide a soft, light cellular inner core such that when a force is applied to the cover, the outer skin will deform and compress the inner core, providing a soft feel to the bolster.
