The process includes polymerizing at least one conjudated diene in the presence of an organolithium initiator to a substantial completion. Abstract:

The invention disclosed herein provides a process for preparing a diene-containing synthetic rubber having improved green strength which includes the steps of charging a reaction vessel with water, an emulsifier, an initiator, an N-(alkoxymethyl)acrylamide monomer and a monomer containing a vinyl group, purging the vessel with an inert gas, charging a diene monomer and an activator to the vessel, polymerizing the monomers to form a copolymer; and, thereafter extracting the copolymer from the vessel and any unreacted monomers. A styrene-butadiene composition containing up to about 10 percent by weight of N-(isobutoxymethyl)acrylamide exhibits better stress-strain properties than a comparable styrene-butadiene rubber without the acrylamide compound.

Abstract:

It has been discovered that block copolymers comprising at least two polymer blocks containing a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon monomer contributed units and at least one polymer block conjugated diene monomer contributed units exhibit desirable adhesive properties. The vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon content [S] of the instant block copolymers is 25% to 60% by weight and the vinyl content of the conjugated diene portion [V] is 30% to 70%. The relationship between the vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon content [S] and the vinyl content of the conjugated diene portion [V] satisfies the formula: 75. ltoreq. [S]+[V]. ltoreq. 100. According to the instant invention, adhesive compositions may be prepared which contain about 10% to about 50% of the block copolymers, about 20% to about 80% of a compatible tackifying resin; about 10% to about 40% of a platicizing oil; about 0. 2% to about 2. 5% of various stabilizers and 0% to about 10% of a compatible wax.

Abstract:

A continuous process as disclosed which produces a clear, high impact block copolymer having a vinyl aryl monomer content of at least 70 percent of the block copolymer. This continuous process involves the continuous preparation of a multiblock copolymer which comprises the alternate feeding of monomer streams to a reaction zone wherein a product stream is withdrawn from the polymerization system at the same rate as the total rate of the feed streams.
