Abstract:
Methods are presented for reducing reactivity of ferroalloys used in the manufacture of stick welding electrodes with ferroalloy coatings, in which surface metal silicon of ferroalloy powder is stabilized by dissolving or prereacting the surface silicon or silicon dioxide to provide stabilized ferroalloy powder with decreased surface reactivity to caustic silicate solutions that can be mixed with silicate solution to form a slurry for coating precut welding rods.

The exposed metal tip of the strike end of an SMAW welding electrode is covered with a protective coating formed from a binder and metal particles. Because metal particles rather than graphite particles are used to provide electrical conductivity to this protective coating, flare-up of the arc when initially struck is eliminated substantially completely. In addition, the potential for weld porosity problems is also eliminated, because the metal particles of the inventive electrode do not produce COas a reaction by-product which can ultimately lead to improper welding technique.

Abstract:
A system for measuring fume generation rates and total fume emissions of welding and allied processes includes a fume collection chamber and an automated welding assembly. The fume collection chamber includes a fume chamber housing, a door attached to the housing, a filter support connected to the housing, a hood connected to the housing and a connector attached to the housing and/or the hood. The automated welding assembly includes a rail, a carriage moveably mounted on the rail, a gun arm connected to the carriage and a welding gun mounted to the gun arm.
