Abstract:
A centrifuge for separating blood and blood components having a blood processing vessel mounted on a rotor of a centrifuge. A sensor in the outflow race of a return peristaltic pump detects air bubbles in the fluid within a return loop. The sensor may be a sonic sensor, a sonic pulse echo sensor, or capacitive plates. A pre-determined minimum bubble size or sizes or a cumulative volume may be selected, and the device operator may be warned only of the existence of bubbles that exceed a certain size or of a cumulative volume of bubbles, or the blood donation procedure may be stopped if a bubble exceeds a certain critical size or if a pre-determined volume of bubbles over a certain period or volume of fluid is exceeded.

Abstract:
A method of distributing a plurality of cells in a bioreactor of a cell expansion system includes manipulating an orientation of the bioreactor such that a net impulse due to gravity acting on the plurality cells in the bioreactor is reduced. One method includes (a) rotating the bioreactor at an angular velocity ω about an axis of rotation and through an angular displacement θ, the bioreactor rotating from a first orientation to a second orientation; (b) holding the bioreactor still at the second orientation for a first period of time t, wherein tsubstantially equals 2/ω; (c) rotating the bioreactor at the angular velocity ω about the axis of rotation and through the angular displacement θ; and (d) holding the bioreactor still for a second period of time t, wherein tsubstantially equals t.
Conformance Correction To Improve Hydrocarbon Recovery From A Subterranean Formation
A non-crosslinking salt of a monovalent cation is added to a gelation solution comprising an acrylamide polymer and a redox crosslinking system to render the viscosity and uniformity of the resulting gel less sensitive to the concentrations of the gel components. The gel is used for conformance correction treatments of subterranean hydrocarbon-bearing formations to reduce the permeability of a high permeability zone adjacent a low permeability zone.

Abstract:
A process is provided for constructing a fluid impermeable subterranean barrier wall in a permeable earthen material at an earthen surface. The process is initiated by excavating an earthen pit in the permeable earthen material. A gelable slurry is prepared including unconsolidated solids, an aqueous solvent, a crosslinkable polymer, and a polymer crosslinking agent. The unconsolidated solids have a bulk component consisting of a soil or a clay. The unconsolidated solids can also include a number of additive agents which enhance the performance of the gelable slurry, such as density control agents, mixing agents, permeability reduction agents, filtration control agents and strength loss reduction agents. The gelable slurry is placed in the earthen pit and gelled to substantial maturity. The resulting gel binds the unconsolidated solids present in the earthen pit to convert the gelable slurry to a gelled continuum of consolidated solids, which forms the fluid impermeable barrier wall in the earthen pit.
Oil Recovery Process Using A Viscosity Adjusted Gelation System
A gelation system for reducing the permeability of a subterranean region is provided by sequentially injecting slugs of a polymer solution and a crosslinking agent solution capable of crosslinking the polymer. The viscosity of the crosslinking agent solution is adjusted to facilitate mixing of the slugs in the desired treatment region to a form gel therein and minimize premature gelation outside of the treatment region.
