Abstract:

The excess space and weight capacity that is typical of a launch of large satellites to high-energy orbits, such as a geosynchronous orbit, is used to deploy small satellites at a substantially lower-energy orbit, such as a low-earth orbit. An orbit-transfer vehicle provides the navigation, propulsion, and control systems required to transport a payload satellite from a geosynchronous-transfer orbit (GTO) to a predetermined low-earth orbit (LEO). Depending upon the particular configuration, upon achieving the low-earth orbit, the orbit transfer vehicle either releases the payload satellite, or remains attached to the payload satellite to provide support services, such as power, communications, and navigation, to the payload satellite. To reduce the fuel requirements for this deployment via the orbit-transfer vehicle, the orbit-transfer vehicle employs aerobraking to bring the satellite into a low-earth orbit. The aerobraking is preferably performed at a nominal altitude of 150 km above the earth, where the atmosphere is dense enough to allow for a reasonably sized drogue device, yet rare enough to avoid the need for special purpose heat-shielding materials.

Abstract:

Systems, methods and devices are provided that allow more efficient transfer and processing of sensor information in a hierarchical data system. The system provides for a plurality of component area managers (CAM), each of the CAMS being in operable communication with at least one of a plurality of transducers that monitors a phenomena of a component and in operable communication with a data bus. A CAM comprises a processor in operable communication with the at least one transducer of the plurality of transducers, wherein the first processor is configured to record data generated by the at least one transducer of the plurality of transducers, to reduce the recorded data, to place the reduced data on the data bus. The system also includes a transducer selection module controlled by the first processor by which the first processor selects one of the plurality of transducers to record and a rolling buffer in operable communication with the first processor and in operable communication with the at least one transducer by which to record the data generated by the at least one transducer of the plurality in a first-in-first-out manner.

Abstract:

A method of producing a metal/ceramic composite structure in which an uncolidated metal or metal alloy powder is loaded into a sealable glass mold comprising a hollow ceramic sleeve and a sealable outer glass envelope surrounding the ceramic sleeve and forming with the outer wall of the ceramic sleeve a sealable chamber for the metal or metal alloy powder, wherein the glass is a type which becomes plastic when heated. The air in the mold is removed under vacuum and the mold is sealed and placed into a free flowing refractory powder in a crucible and consolidated by sintering under atmospheric pressure (CAP. RTM. process). Removal of the glass envelope leaves a composite article having a consolidated metal or metal alloy layer surrounding and placing a hollow ceramic liner (sleeve) under both radial and axial compression. A ceramic-line metal gun barrel insert can be produced by using a ceramic sleeve with rifling on its inner surface.

Abstract:

A generator having a tubular gear made of shape memory alloy in sheet form loatingly supported for rotation about an axis fixedly spaced from the rotational axis of a roller gear. The tubular gear is sequentially deformed by exposure to a geothermal heat source and meshing engagement with the roller gear. Such sequential deformation of the tubular gear is controlled by temperature differential to induce and sustain rotation of the gears in response to which the heat energy is converted into electrical energy.

Abstract:

An elongated rod made of a shape memory alloy composition having selected eudoelastic properties, is deformed into a dimensionally compact coil for packaged storage under stress maintained by physical constraint. Upon selective removal of the constraint allowing shape recovery, a substantial increase in axial length of the rod occurs in order to improve its performance in various installations, including long rod penetrating projectiles.
