Abstract:

Improved preparations for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia comprise saw palmetto berry extract containing phytosterols and one or more low irritability constituents that enhance penetration of the extract into hair follicular pores. The low irritability penetration enhancer(s) may be selected from the group consisting of adapalene, tretinoin, retinaldehyde, tazarotene, salicylic acid, azelaic acid, and glycolic acid. Also provided is a method for reducing hair loss by application to the scalp of the improved preparations.

Abstract:

Helping users to track the contents (e.g., files) stored on various types of storage media without requiring the user to insert the storage media into a read device of a machine, such as a floppy drive of a personal computer, and/or helping users to locate desired content (e.g., a file) without having to insert numerous storage media into a read device of a machine. The contents of a given storage medium may be determined by associating a machine-readable label with each machine-readable medium, and the contents thereof. When a user wants to know the contents of the machine-readable medium, they merely need to have another device (e.g., a Palm Pilot provided with a bar code scanner) read the label. The device may include a database synchronized with a database managed by the machine which is used to write content to, and/or read content from, the machine-readable medium. A file may be found by (i) allowing a user to enter one or more search parameters into the device, such as a handheld, untethered device, (ii) generating a search query from the entered parameter(s), (iii) getting a search result(s) indicating the storage medium that includes the desired content, and (iv) helping the user to associate the indicated storage medium with the physical storage medium actually storing the desired content.

A controllable-gain amplifier is connected between the transmitter and receiver of a telephone set and is controlled in response to the level of the telephone user's speech so as to provide an increase in gain when the user speaks too loud and a decrease in gain when the user speaks too low. This results in a sidetone which causes the user to change his or her voice level to obtain an acceptable level of sidetone. A better-controlled user voice level is thus achieved.

Abstract:

In an adaptive filter (56) the coefficients of a transversal filter (64) are adjusted by a processing circuit (78) to reduce the difference between a signal applied to the filter input (55) and a reference signal applied to a further input (57) so that the filter transfer characteristic becomes such that it will convert a first signal into a second signal. The first and second signals are constituted by a signal occurring in a signal path through a communications receiver and an ideal version of this signal respectively. In order that a relatively simple but hence relatively slow algorithm can be employed by the processing circuit without requiring a correspondingly long first signal the first and second signals are not applied to the adaptive filter directly but only after convolution in respective transversal filters (49,62) with the output of a noise source (60). The adaptive filter is then used as an equalizer in the receiver.

Abstract:

Ideally, when a signal is quantized, the range of the quantizer should be matched to the power of the signal. Disclosed herein is adaptive quantizer apparatus which utilizes a particular quantizing scheme for those communications where the power of the signal to be quantized is unknown, but remains constant for the duration of a communication. The amplitude range of an adaptive quantizer is adjusted during an initial training period to a value appropriate to the power of the applied input signal. This is accomplished by successively altering the amplitude range by a multiplicative quantity that depends upon the amplitude of the quantizer output signal and upon the time elapsed since the onset of the training period.
