Abstract:

Helping users to track the contents (e.g., files) stored on various types of storage media without requiring the user to insert the storage media into a read device of a machine, such as a floppy drive of a personal computer, and/or helping users to locate desired content (e.g., a file) without having to insert numerous storage media into a read device of a machine. The contents of a given storage medium may be determined by associating a machine-readable label with each machine-readable medium, and the contents thereof. When a user wants to know the contents of the machine-readable medium, they merely need to have another device (e.g., a Palm Pilot provided with a bar code scanner) read the label. The device may include a database synchronized with a database managed by the machine which is used to write content to, and/or read content from, the machine-readable medium. A file may be found by (i) allowing a user to enter one or more search parameters into the device, such as a handheld, untethered device, (ii) generating a search query from the entered parameter(s), (iii) getting a search result(s) indicating the storage medium that includes the desired content, and (iv) helping the user to associate the indicated storage medium with the physical storage medium actually storing the desired content.

A controllable-gain amplifier is connected between the transmitter and receiver of a telephone set and is controlled in response to the level of the telephone user's speech so as to provide an increase in gain when the user speaks too loud and a decrease in gain when the user speaks too low. This results in a sidetone which causes the user to change his or her voice level to obtain an acceptable level of sidetone. A better-controlled user voice level is thus achieved.

Abstract:

Ideally, when a signal is quantized, the range of the quantizer should be matched to the power of the signal. Disclosed herein is adaptive quantizer apparatus which utilizes a particular quantizing scheme for those communications where the power of the signal to be quantized is unknown, but remains constant for the duration of a communication. The amplitude range of an adaptive quantizer is adjusted during an initial training period to a value appropriate to the power of the applied input signal. This is accomplished by successively altering the amplitude range by a multiplicative quantity that depends upon the amplitude of the quantizer output signal and upon the time elapsed since the onset of the training period.

Abstract:

An error reducing arrangement is provided for a signal receiver wherein a sequence of received signals is divided into groups and each group is partitioned into subgroups. A signal representative of the deviations among the signals of each group and a signal representative of the deviations among the signals of each subgroup of said group are generated. Responsive to a subgroup deviation signal exceeding its group deviation signal, the subgroup signals are altered to reduce the subgroup deviations. In this manner errors are reduced without affecting error free signals.

In one aspect, a method includes accessing impression data describing impressions of advertisements on publisher resources, wherein for each impression of an advertisement on a publisher resource, the impression data identifies a publisher and categories to which the publisher belongs, an advertiser and verticals to which the advertiser belongs, and attributes of the impression; receiving benchmark specification data defining a benchmark specification for one of the publishers or the advertisers, and further defining performance metrics based on the attributes of the impressions for the publisher or the advertiser and impressions of other publishers and other advertisers; and generating reporting data for displaying a benchmark report of performance metrics for one of the publishers or advertisers respectively relative to other publishers or advertisers and grouped by a respective publisher category or advertiser vertical.
