Abstract:

A flywheel energy storage system for maintaining fan speed of a cooling fan on an internal combustion engine. The flywheel energy storage system allows a fan to rotate independent of the internal combustion engine and use energy stored in a flywheel for the continued rotation of the fan when a speed of the internal combustion engine falls below a predetermined speed. In this manner, the fan can provide an adequate air flow to cool the components of the internal combustion engine regardless of the speed of the internal combustion engine. To accomplish this, a fan is coupled to a clutch and a flywheel.

Abstract:

Engines having turbochargers with a mechanically actuated wastegate typically control the wastegate in response to the air pressure at an outlet of a compressor portion of the turbocharger. Some engine configurations dont provide enough compressor outlet pressure variation to suitably control the wastegate. In the present invention, a control strategy is provided for opening and closing a wastegate based on exhaust gas pressure.

Abstract:

A method and a system for treating an internal combustion engine exhaust gas using a hydrocarbons as fuel. The internal combustion engine exhaust gas contains particulates and toxic substances. Such particulates and toxic substances being liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and No. The system uses carbon dioxide to interact with the exhaust gas. The carbon dioxide is stored within a container at its triple state. The carbon dioxide and the exhaust gas are conducted through an emission exchanger. The exhaust gas is scrubbed or cleaned by the carbon dioxide and the hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, No , and particulate emissions are carried away by a carbon dioxide gas stream. The cleaned exhaust gas can be discharged into the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide gas stream can be cleaned by passing the same through separator components which remove the pollutants therefrom. The cleaned carbon dioxide gas is processed further to restore the carbon dioxide to its triple state for reuse within another operative cycle of the method or system.

A method and apparatus for delivering a mixture of fuel and gas to a combustion chamber of a compression ignition engine. The method and apparatus includes compressing a gas to a pressure sufficient to initiate combustion of a fuel, delivering a stream of the gas toward the combustion chamber, injecting a quantity of fuel into the stream of gas to create a near homogeneous fuel and gas mixture, and delivering the fuel and gas mixture to the combustion chamber such that combustion occurs substantially within the combustion chamber.
