Abstract:

A system, method and computer program product for managing power consumption in a system comprising at least two computing devices. The at least two computing devices are organized as part of active computing device group or a ready computing device group, the ready computing devices configured into various modes of readiness including a standby mode, a hibernating mode, and a power-off mode. A control device receives obtained sensed parameters indicative of the processing load at the group of active computing devices and determines a “Readiness” index value representing a state of system readiness which is a function of a transition time parameter representing a time for moving one or more computing devices from the second group of ready computing devices to the first group of active devices in response to a service level violation. To achieve maximum power saving and yet meet various performance targets, the ready computing devices are dynamically allocated from amongst three states: standby, hibernating or power-off, based on the current readiness index value.

Abstract:

A vending machine messaging system for displaying messages within a vending machine. The vending machine messaging system generally includes a vending machine having a window, a display unit attached to an interior surface of the window and a server in communication with the display unit via a communications network. The server communicates various messages to be displayed by the display unit such as advertisements, stock quotes, news, weather, nutritional content of the merchandise and the like. The vendor is able to add their own messages for display on their vending machines by communicating with the server. Advertisers add various advertisements to the server which are then reviewed and disseminated to the appropriate vending machines.

Abstract:

A system method and computer program product for managing readiness states of a plurality of computing devices. A programmed processor unit operates, upon receipt of a request, to either: provide one or more computing devices from an inactive pool to an active pool, or accept one or more active computing devices into the inactive pool. An Inactive Pool Manager proactively manages the inactive states of each computing device by: determining the desired number (and identities) of computing devices to be placed in each inactive state of readiness by solving a constraint optimization problem that describes a user-specified trade-off between expected readiness (estimated time to be able to activate computing devices when they are needed next) and conserving energy; generating a plan for changing the current set of inactive states to the desired set; and, executing the plan. Multiple alternative ways of quantifying the desired responsiveness to surges in demand are provided, and, in each case, the tradeoff between responsiveness and power savings is formulated as an objective function with constraints, and the desired number of devices in each inactive state emerges as the solution to a constraint optimization problem.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus are disclosed for diagnosing faults in individual cylinders of an internal combustion engine. An engine (12) is accelerated, while an analyzer (10) provides measurements of the time intervals required for the engine to rotate for successive, equal angular increments as the engine is being accelerated, where each increment is a fraction of the rotation required for a single engine cylinder power contribution. The values of the resulting sequence of time interval measurements generally undulate with time about an average value due to the power contribution of each individual cylinder, with the average value of the time interval measurements and the magnitude of the undulations about this average value generally decreasing with time due to the acceleration of the engine. The analyzer (10) modifies the time interval measurements in the sequence so as to provide a modified sequence having a substantially constant average value and substantially constant magnitude of undulation. The analyzer (10) then compares the characteristics of the individual undulations in the modified sequence so as to diagnose faults in the individual cylinders in the engine.

Abstract:

The method of the invention enables the situating of reasoning engines which have the capability to store premises as knowledge representation expressions, as well as to conclude knowledge representation expressions and/or to evaluate (or test), knowledge representation expressions and/or to respond to delivered directive events that request the engine to perform reasoning. The result of the method is a situated reasoning system which extends the given reasoning engine's functionality by augmenting it with procedural attachments, using zero or more provided attached procedures. This extension of functionality permits especially the capabilities for sensing and/or effecting and/or responding to delivered directive events. The method permits attachment of the attached procedures to be dynamic or static. The method permits the given reasoning engine to be any of a variety of kinds, corresponding to variety of knowledge representations combined with a variety of control strategies: The invention further gives a method for inter-communication between multiple situated reasoning systems.
