A jostle-responsive object finder system including a user carryable and activatable code-signal wireless transmitter, and an activatible signal receiver within an object unit which is attachable to an object of the user's choice, and responsive to such a code signal, but only after the occurrence of a jostle action which is delivered to the object unit, to initiate an attention-getting response detectable by the user.
Methods And Systems For Improved Membrane Based Calorimeters
Methods and devices for improved membrane-based microcalorimeters are disclosed. The sample mixing speed or “temporal addenda” of the calorimeter can be improved using membranes with patterned hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions, oscillating droplet squeezing methods, and textured membrane surfaces with ridges designed to facilitate rapid mixing. The thermal coupling between the membranes and the other calorimetric addenda can be minimized by exposing the back side of the calorimetric membrane to a vacuum, while keeping the front side exposed to a humidified environmental chamber. Specially shaped, membrane associated heat-transfer-elements can help the system accurately monitor substantial portions of the sample. These elements, in conjunction with the position of the edge of the sample, can be designed to minimize inaccuracy due to edge evaporation effects. These improvements, which may be applied either individually or collectively, can reduce the distorting effect that slow mixing, addenda, thermal fluctuations, and edge effects have on microcalorimetric measurements.

Abstract:
An external signal processor is provided for use with a personal computer. The signal processor incorporates hardware components for receiving external analog or frequency signals and for converting the signals to digital form for retrieval by the computer in nibble mode. Interconnection with the personal computer is through the parallel printer port, with the signal processor installed between the computer and an external printer. Normal printer functions are available when a transparent mode is enabled. The signal processor can also monitor one or more external digital signals and output one or more digital control signals. An example of programmable control software is also provided.

Abstract:
A distributed CBX system which provides a virtual network between remotely located CBXs is disclosed. The CBXs are connected to both a voice network and a packet network. A first CBX may interrogate a second CBX to determine, by way of example, the status of a called station at the second CBX over the packet network. The second CBX not only provides the status of the called station but also provides, if the called station is clear, the number of a free incoming line at the second CBX. In this manner, the first CBX can place a call to both an available line and station at the second CBX. Alternatively, because of facility availability or tariff structures, the call may be originated over common carrier facilities in the reverse direction originating over common carrier facilities from the called party end.

Abstract:
An exercise/therapy support system useable with a personal-exercise-type machine. A sonar ranging device monitors motion in the machine during exercise to produce an exercise-related, visual display which is compared, in real-time, with a preprogrammed, selected-exercise-regime display. Post-exercise data can be made available for analysis.
System And Method For An Improved Calorimeter For Determining Thermodynamic Properties Of Chemical And Biological Reactions
A system and method for an improved calorimeter for determining thermodynamic properties of biological and chemical reactions. A microcalorimeter device comprises a thin amorphous membrane anchored to a frame. Thermometers and heaters are placed on one side of a thermal conduction layer mounted on the central portion of the membrane. An environmental chamber is vacated and humidified. First and second samples are placed on the membranes of first and second microcalorimeters. Each sample is heated and its individual heat capacity determined. The samples are then mixed by sandwiching the two microcalorimeters together to cause a binding reaction to occur. The enthalpy of binding is determined by measuring the amount of heat liberated during the reaction. The mixture is then heated and the heat capacity of the mixture is determined. From this data, a binding constant is calculated.

Abstract:
A software distribution service provides time-based licensing of software. Third-party software is augmented with functionality to enable tracking based on usage, and is downloaded through a network to a user's workstation. A user logs into an account over the network to verify account details and a sufficient balance with an authentication server. If verified, the augmented software is activated, and the time of usage is tracked. During use, the augmented software periodically communicates with the authentication server to deduct a metered-usage fee from the user's pre-paid account balance.

About one-quarter of all colonoscopies performed in the United States are done as increased cancer surveillance for patients who had polyps removed during earlier colonoscopies, said Dr. David Lieberman, chief of gastroenterology at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Ore.
"Colon-polyp surveillance now accounts for about 25% of colonoscopies among persons over 50 years of age in the United States, a substantial burden on health resources," said David Lieberman, MD, of Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.
