Abstract:

A door hold-open device including a track, a first catch slidably mounted for longitudinal movement in the track, a stop assembly including a second catch coupled to the track and adapted to engage the first catch wherein the second catch is moveable in a direction different than the longitudinal direction, a resilient member that applies a force to the second catch to urge the second catch into a position where the second catch engages the first catch when the first catch is adjacent to the second catch, and a linear actuator having a first position and a second position, wherein the linear actuator applies a first force to the resilient member in the first position and a second different force to the resilient member in the second position.

Abstract:

Systems are provided for electromagnetic actuation of a valve mechanism. A valve is linearly moveable between a first closed position and a second open position. A first spring is compressed when the valve is in the first closed position, and a second valve spring is compressed when the valve is in the second open position. An electromagnetic actuation assembly and a permanent magnet is combined with the valve, such that the valve is latchable in either a closed or open position, and is readily movable between positions through application of energy to the electromagnetic circuitry. The electromagnetic circuitry is controllable to increase or decrease the local magnetic flux, such as to promote movement of the valve, or to provide a soft landing of the valve at either end of movement. Some system embodiments provide energy recovery, feed back, and/or feed forward sensing and control. The electromagnetic valve system can be implemented for a wide variety of engines, valves and actuators, such as for variable valve timing, valve disablement, and/or hybrid engine and energy storage applications.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for improving the fuel economy and reducing emissions of an internal combustion engine. A device is provided for controlling the energy conversion function of the engine by computer control of engine valves and distribution valves. This control provides for the normal engine operation by providing intake air and fuel and exhausting the products of combustion; it also provides for operating the engine as an air compressor and storing the compressed air in a reservoir; it also provides for operating the engine as an air motor utilizing the stored compressed air; it also provides a supercharged engine function by utilizing the stored compressed air.
