Abstract:

An air induction system of an automotive internal combustion engine comprises an evaporative emission control device inserted into an air intake tube connecting an air cleaner canister and an intake manifold of the engine. The evaporative emission control device comprises a rigid tubular body that includes an upstream end and a downstream end. A hydrocarbon vapor absorbing element is disposed within the rigid tubular body such that the upstream face is recessed from the upstream end of the rigid tubular body, and the downstream face is recessed from the downstream end of the rigid tubular body. The extended ends of the rigid tubular body thereby protect the recessed faces from incidental contact. The air intake tube is formed of elastomeric material that provides flexible support for the evaporative emission control device to protect against damage due to vibration.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for controlling a combustion engine. Means are provided for controlling the energy conversion function of the engine. Adjustments of these control means are obtained by sensing at least one engine operating condition, developing an electrical signal indicative of such condition, and, with a digital computer, calculating repetitively values corresponding to settings of the means used to control the energy conversion function of the engine. Abstract:

A fuel delivery system for an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The system includes primary and auxiliary heating means for vaporizing a liquid fuel, vapor storage means, carburetor means including metering venturi means for mixing the vaporized liquid fuel with atmospheric air to provide a combustible air/fuel mixture and means for controlling the delivery of vaporized fuel to the carburetor means. The carburetor means may be connected to a conventional internal combustion engine intake manifold for eventual delivery of the combustible mixture to the combustion chambers of the engine. The vaporized liquid fuel delivery means of the system includes a variable orifice vapor delivery nozzle for modulating the vaporized fuel content of the air/fuel ratio of the combustion mixture. The auxiliary heating means are operative to provide an initial supply of vapor to a vapor reservoir upon start-up of the internal combustion engine. Normal vaporization is provided by the primary heating means which include a vapor producing heat exchanger situated within the exhaust gas stream of the internal combustion engine to utilize waste heat from the exhaust gases to produce normal running vapor.

Abstract:

Vapors in the fuel tank of a vehicle are collected in a carbon canister. An ejector or aspirator is used to purge the carbon canister in a pressure-charged engine in which a positive pressure exists in the intake. A compact ejector includes a substantially planar flange and a venturi tube coupled to the flange with a central axis of the venturi tube substantially parallel to the flange. By manufacturing the ejector in two pieces, dimensions within the ejector: throat, converging section, and diverging section, is more accurate than prior art manufacturing techniques thereby providing better flow characteristics throughout the boost range. By forming one of the two pieces of the ejector integrally with the air intake component in which it is coupled, decreases part count and the number of manufacturing processes.

Abstract:

An integrated hydrocarbon trap and air filter in the soundtube of a vehicle for use in conjunction with the engine's air intake system is disclosed. The trap and air filter comprises a housing body having first and second ends. The housing includes hydrocarbon-adsorbing media and air filter media. The hydrocarbon-adsorbing and air filter trap are incorporated into a soundtube. A first soundtube portion connects the housing to the engine's air intake system while a second soundtube is open to ambient and connects the housing to a vehicle body structure such as a fender. Selection of the body diameter, thickness, and length, the dimensions and type of both air filter media and hydrocarbon-adsorbing media and position of the air filter media, NVH media, and space relative to the trap media and location of the integrated hydrocarbon trap and air filter along the soundtube provide superior tunability and adaptability.
