A compression release engine brake assembly adapted for use with an internal combustion engine, and an exhaust valve ( ) operable to open in a normal exhaust lift event (FIG. ) and in a brake lift event (FIG. ). The engine includes an exhaust valve actuating mechanism ( ) for imparting reciprocal movement to said exhaust valve ( ) in response to rotation of a cam shaft ( ) including a cam profile ( ), a normal lift portion ( ) and a brake lift portion ( ). The assembly includes a lost motion device ( ) moveable between a normal lost motion condition (FIG. ) and an actuated condition (FIG. ) in response to movement of an input member ( ). An energy storage spring ( ) is operable, after being compressed to an energy storage condition (FIG. ) to be able to bias the input member ( ) toward a second position, effecting the actuated condition of the lost motion device ( ). A latching mechanism ( ) is operable to first displace the energy storage spring ( ) to a compressed condition, and then release it just before the cam follower ( ) traverses the brake lift portion ( ), in response to the pivotal movement of the rocker arm assembly ( ) which comprises part of the exhaust valve actuating mechanism.

Abstract:

A closed hydraulic system (22) is provided for transmitting steering movement to a rear wheel steering assembly (16) in response to steering movement of a front wheel steering assembly (14). The front wheel steering assembly is controlled by a steering wheel (18) and a power steering assembly (20). Movement of the actuator piston is transmitted to the rear wheel steering assembly via first and second cam assemblies (122,124) which effect same direction rear wheel steering for rather small front wheel steering angles and which effect opposite direction rear wheel steering for greater front wheel steering angles. Pump assembly (56) includes first and second neutral valves (92,94) for intercommunicating opposite sides of the pump piston (78) with a chamber ( 83) when the piston is in a neutral position. System (22) also includes a reservoir (68) disposed above the normal fluid level of the system and exposed to atmospheric pressure.

A valve control system for an internal combustion engine. The system includes an outer rocker arm which is engageable with an engine poppet valve, and an inner rocker arm which is engageable with a cam lobe formed in an engine camshaft and a slidable latch member which mechanically links and unlinks the inner and outer rocker arms. The latch member is axially moveable relative to the inner and outer rocker arms between an active position wherein the inner rocker arm engages the outer rocker arm to transmit a valve opening force from the camshaft to the poppet valve, and an inactive position wherein the inner and outer rocker arms are out of engagement and free to rotate relative to one another. The system is adapted for use in a valve train wherein the engine poppet valve remains closed when the inner and outer rocker arms are unlinked when the latch member is in an inactive position and wherein the engine poppet valve opens and closes in response to the cam lobe when the inner and outer rocker arms are linked together when the latch member is in an active position. An actuator operates a bellcrank mechanism which contacts the latch mechanism to move the latch mechanism to an active and an inactive position.

A valve control system for an internal combustion engine which does not require synchronization with the engine rotation is disclosed. The system includes an actuator having a coil electrically energized by a control unit causing a stator to magnetically attract an armature where the armature is coupled to a plunger by an actuator spring. The plunger pushes against a pivoted actuator arm having an inner and outer housing which are biased into extension by an arm spring. The actuator arm contacts and forces a slidable latch member into an inactive position and a latch spring returns the latch member into an active position. The system includes an outer rocker arm which is engageable with an engine poppet valve, and an inner rocker arm which is engageable with a cam lobe and the latch member which rotatably links and unlinks the inner and outer rocker arms. The system is adapted wherein the engine poppet valve remains closed when the inner and outer rocker arms are unlinked when the latch member is in the inactive position and wherein the engine poppet valve opens and closes in response to the cam lobe when the inner and outer rocker arms are rotatably linked when the latch member is in the active position. In an alternate embodiment, the plunger contacts a first arm of a pivoted bellcrank and a second arm contacts the latch member.

Abstract:

A valve control system for an internal combustion engine, which is particularly adapted for selectively actuating and deactuating an engine valve. The system includes an inner rocker arm which contacts the cam and an outer rocker arm which engages the valve, the inner and outer arms being in nesting relation to one another and in pivotal contact with the output plunger of a stationary lash adjuster. A sliding latch member is movable between an active position wherein the inner and outer arms are effectively latched together to transmit the force of the cam through the inner and outer arms to the valve, and an inactive position wherein the inner and outer arms are free to move relative to one another. A spring acting between the inner and outer arms biases the inner arm into engagement with the cam and the outer arm, and the outer arm into engagement with the valve and the lash adjuster. Positive stops between the inner and outer arms are effective to limit lash adjuster leak down.
