Abstract:

A method of providing hydraulic pressure for mechanical work from an engine lubricating system in an internal combustion engine by supplying oil to an engine lubrication gallery for lubricating the engine and at least one variable oil demand accessory. Each of the variable oil demand accessories have individual pressure regulators. The output of the variable displacement pump is regulated to the sum of fluid flow required by the engine lubricating system and the demand for fluid generated by the individual pressure regulators on each of the engine accessories, regardless of the engine output.

Abstract:

A dual temperature control system as part of an engine cooling system. In one aspect, a valve is regulated as a function of engine load and disposed in a by-pass line between the radiator and the coolant pump. The valve is designed to normally block the by-pass line, but permits coolant to by-pass the thermostat and be conveyed from the radiator to the engine when the load of the engine approaches a wide-open-throttle condition. In another aspect, both high-temperature and low-temperature thermostats are employed and a normally closed valve is actuated when the load of the engine approaches a wide-open-throttle condition to permit coolant to be conveyed through the low-temperature thermostat and on to the engine.

Abstract:

For the production of piston pins having a hard peripheral area, a relatively inexpensive chill casting method is used. A chill form having a mold cavity for a piston pin is embedded in a casting mold, cast iron is poured into the mold cavity of the chill form, and then the peripheral area of the piston pin that results from this process is cooled by means of the chill form, is white-solidified, and thereby forms a hard wear-resistant surface.

Abstract:

The specification discloses a self-contained headlamp washer system which consists of an electrical pump assembly, flexible washer fluid container, headlamp washer assembly, and a tubular hosing connecting means. Two (2) embodiments of the invention are disclosed by applicant, i. e. : a self-contained headlamp washer system in which the headlamp washer nozzle assembly is contained within and by the headlamp bezel, and a headlamp washer nozzle assembly which is of a two-piece construction independent of the headlamp bezel, said washer nozzle assembly is capable of being either attached or clipped on to any existing headlamp bezel. In both disclosed embodiments, applicant prefers that the headlamp washer nozzle assembly be made from a molded plastic material of high strength and impact resistant characteristics. The headlamp washer nozzle assembly is specifically designed so that no part thereof protrudes on, or covers any portion of the vehicle headlamp, and has a specially constructed long fluid passageway and washer fluid discharge apertures which allow the placement of the washer fluid over the entire surface of the vehicle headlamps in a controlled and more effective cleaning pattern.

Abstract:

There is disclosed a method of attaching retainers to automotive floor mats, as well as an embodiment of a floor mat utilizing said method. The typical floor mat utilizing this method will have a retainer with a series of male or female fasteners provided on the retainer, and the floor mat will have openings corresponding to these fasteners, through which the other fastener, whether it be male or female, can be passed to firmly attach the floor mat to the retainer. The retainer may be one sided or two sided, their may, or may not be holes in the floor mat, depending on the particular fasteners being used, the openings in the floor mat, if provided, may, or may not, be reinforced, and a heel pad can optionally be attached at the same time.

Abstract:

The specification discloses a non-skid carpet protector which has numerous stiff bristles placed on the underside thereof to prevent movement upon the entry and existing of occupants of a motor vehicle. Two modifications of the invention are disclosed by Applicant, i. e. a non-skid carpet protector which covers only a limited area of the horizontal part of the motor vehicle passenger compartment floor, near the vehicle's brake and accelerator, and a non-skid carpet protector which covers a substantial portion of both the horizontal and vertically inclined portion of the floor of the motor vehicle passenger compartment. The non-skid carpet protector is specifically designed so that it may be easily secured to the floor carpet within a motor vehicle, by the application of a vertical pressure on top of said non-skid carpet protector, thus causing the stiff bristles to effectively engage in a frictional relationship the underlying carpet to be protected.

Abstract:

An improved cooling system for an internal combustion engine in an automotive vehicle which utilizes recirculating liquid coolant and provides an initial engine warm-up flow circuit extending: from a coolant pump, through cooling passages in the cylinder head, through a heat exchanger used to warm a passenger compartment, and back to the pump whereby a temperature responsive flow control valve or thermostat prohibits a flow of coolant from the cylinder head to cooling passages in the engine block which provides adequate cooling of the upper surfaces of the combustion chamber which are formed by the cylinder head while promoting a relatively rapid heating of the surfaces of the engine cylinders formed by the block. After the warm-up period, the thermostat opens to permit coolant flow into a down-flow passage between the cylinder head coolant passages and the engine block coolant passages resulting in a normal engine cooling circuit extending: from the coolant pump, through the cylinder head cooling passages, then through the engine block cooling passages, through a vehicle radiator, and back to the coolant pump. The improved cooling system actively cools the upper surfaces of the combustion chamber formed by the cylinder head both during an engine warm-up period and during normal engine operation which promotes complete combustion of the fuel and inhibits knock and pre-ignition.

Abstract:

An internal combustion engine has a piston reciprocable in a cylinder toward and away from a combustion chamber. An intake valve admits air into the combustion chamber. An exhaust valve discharges products of combustion from the combustion chamber. A fuel injector is positioned to direct a plume of fuel into the combustion chamber along a path and in a direction to impinge upon the exhaust valve. The piston has an end face formed with a concave recess or pocket adjacent the exhaust valve. The exhaust valve is constructed and arranged to deflect fuel impinging thereon into the recess. The recess being shaped to redirect fuel back toward the path of the plume of fuel.
