Abstract:

A scanner includes a single scanning element such as a holographic disc or a polygon mirror and an illumination system that provides a plurality of input beams that are directed to different areas on the scanning element. In one embodiment, a light source provides a single beam that is alternately directed to a first area and a second area. While an input beam is incident on the first area, a first scan line forms. While an input beam is incident on the second area, a second scan line forms. Duty-cycle and energy efficiency of this embodiment are high because the beam from the source is switched from one area to the other during dead time when a scan beam would not otherwise have been directed to the desired scan aperture. Separate scan lines are automatically synchronized since they originate from the same source. Thus, alignment of multiple scan lines to form an extended scan line is simplified.

A system that provides a structure which makes use of a recording geometry in which no significant Seidel induced aberrations arise. The recording geometry results in a pattern recorded on a photosensitive surface, thereby creating the hologram on the scanning disc. Reconstruction of the recorded object may be made by exposing the scanning disc to substantially monochromatic light. The hologram on the scanning disc not only directs the reconstruction beam, but also focuses it. An optical element may be used during reconstruction to correct for bow and linearity, and also optimize flatness of the focal plane. Reconstruction also involves achromatization, or correction of beam placement because of mode hops or drift in laser frequency. The reconstruction comprises both pre-scan holograms and post-scan holograms. Recording of the post-scan hologram is achieved with a plurality of lenses which possess different collimating properties in the vertical and horizontal planes.

Abstract:

An in vivo model for human bone metabolism. Human marrow stromal fibroblasts are isolated, expanded in culture, combined with ceramic powder (hydroxyapatite) delivery vehicles with or without fibrin glue and implanted into a mammal. This protocol results in the formation of self-maintained human bone which supports hematopoiesis. This model system can be used to screen compounds which inhibit or stimulate bone formation. The marrow stromal fibroblast delivery vehicles can be implanted into humans to augment bone implants or to repair bone defects.

Abstract:

An optical system includes an extended illumination source configured to emit light from an extended emission surface thereof and a light redirecting layer disposed on the extended emission surface. The light redirecting layer has a structured major surface that includes a regular array of light redirecting structures, each light redirecting structure including a plurality of facets; and a plurality of discrete spaced apart window segments. The optical system includes a plurality of reflective segments where each reflective segment is disposed on a corresponding window segment. For substantially normally incident light, each reflective segment has a total: average optical reflectance of at least 30% in a visible wavelength range extending from about 420 nm to about 650 nm; and optical transmittance of at least 10% for at least one infrared wavelength in an infrared wavelength range extending from about 800 nm to about 1200 nm.

A retroreflective article including a binder layer and a plurality of retroreflective elements. Each retroreflective element includes a transparent microsphere partially embedded in the binder layer. At least some of the retroreflective elements include a first layer that is disposed between the transparent microsphere and the binder layer and a second layer that is disposed between the transparent microsphere and the binder layer. At least one of the first layer and the second layer is a reflective layer; and, the first reflective layer and the second reflective layer differ in reflectivity. For at least some of the retroreflective elements, at least a portion of the second reflective layer is positioned in-parallel to the first reflective layer.
