A method for preparing resin-impregnated graphite articles, including providing a sheet of compressed particles of exfoliated graphite having two major surfaces; impregnating the sheet with a first resin system to form a resin-impregnated sheet; surface treating the resin-impregnated sheet to form at least one structure on at least one of the major surfaces of the sheet to form a surface treated sheet; and treating the sheet with a second resin system.

A substrate useful for the formation of, inter alia, a flow field plate for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell, the substrate formed of at least one resin-impregnated sheet of compressed particles of exfoliated graphite comprising two major surfaces, the substrate having an active area with flow field channels thereon, the sheet of compressed particles of exfoliated graphite having a local web thickness in at least about 50% of its active area that is no more than about 55% greater than the minimum web thickness of the active area of the substrate.

Abstract:

Assemblies having multi-functionalities of any combination of heat spreading, absorption of stray radiation, signal focusing, and shielding are provided. The assemblies may include a heat spreading layer of at least one sheet of a compressed particles of exfoliated graphite, graphitized polymers and combinations thereof. The assemblies may also include at least one magnetic layer, which may provide the benefits of magnetic flux management and/or stray radiation absorption. The assemblies may include an optional plastic coating on one or both of the exterior surfaces. The assemblies may be used to enable fast wireless charging of electronic devices by efficiently focusing magnetic flux for better power transmission efficiency.
