Abstract:

A first embodiment of the invention permits an extension of battery life through detection of the display synchronization signals of a computer and a power management system. The power management system also eliminates need for batteries through use of a 5V power source from pin of the VGA port. A second embodiment improves the ease of use and the utility of the 3D system through removable glasses with improvements over the previous design. These embodiments have improved manufacturability through the use of design that is tolerant of poor quality, low cost components with low electrical tolerances.

Abstract:

The invention is a stereoscopic shutter system having a single liquid crystal (LC) cell. The system may have flexible substrates or non-flexible substrates. The system requires only two electrical conductors to shutter both eyes. The system uses twisted nematic liquid crystal, ferro-electric liquid crystal, pi-cell technology, or other similar shuttering technologies. The system includes only one LC cell, a single large laminated linearly polarizing filter P, and two smaller linear polarizing analyzers oriented in the Pand Pstates. The shutters may be bent into a one-dimensional curved shape about the vertical or horizontal axis.

Abstract:

A digital micro-mirror device (DMD) format conversion system for outputting a stereoscopic encoded optical signal using a DMD and a color wheel is provided. The DMD format conversion system includes a 3D data formatter for receiving an input signal and a DMD data formatter for receiving an output signal having stereoscopic image information and control information from the 3D data formatter and for outputting a DMD output signal having stereoscopic image information and control information. A color wheel control signal and output digital micro-mirror device data are synchronized based on an output frame rate generated by the 3D data formatter independent of the original input frame rate.

Abstract:

Limiting or eliminating external light to the peripheral vision areas of the user reduces flicker. The aperture of the liquid crystal filter is dynamically adjusted to maintain a particular aspect ratio to match the image displayed by computers and television sets. The size of the aperture of the liquid crystal filter is user adjustable through a mechanical or electrical aperture system. The size of the aperture of the liquid crystal filter is automatically adjustable through an electrical aperture control system and a proximity system. The aperture is adjusted based on the sensed distance between the user and the display medium. The location of the aperture is automatically adjustable through an electrical aperture control system and head orientation system. The aperture location in front of the LC shutter is moved vertically or horizontally depending on the pointing direction of the users head with respect to the display system.
