Abstract:

An electronic device including at least one electrode on a substrate and a permeation layer overlaying the at least one electrode. The permeation layer comprises a polymer having a plurality of negatively-charged moieties. The negatively charged moieties may be carboxylates. In one embodiment, the negatively charged moieties are carboxylates from acrylic acids in the permeation layer. The amount of acrylic acid may be less than about 5 mol %. The permeation layer may also contain streptavidin and/or a surfactant. Methods of using the electronic device are also disclosed in which at least one of the selectively addressable electrodes are biased to at least partially neutralize the negatively charged moieties in the overlying permeation layer. Charged entities can then bind to the permeation layer over the biased electrode.

Abstract:

The present invention provides compositions and methods that enable the stabilization and storage of samples by contacting a sample with an assembly of particles, and reducing the water activity level of the contacted sample. By reducing the water activity level of the sample, the assembly of particles minimizes the degradation of the sample. Stabilizers may or may not be added to the assembly of particles to further minimize the degradation of the sample. Subsequently to storage in the assembly of particles, the samples are recoverable by eluting the assembly of particles with a fluid solution. In one embodiment, the entire assembly of particles will dissolve into the solution. In another embodiment, only part of the assembly of particles will dissolve into the solution. The assembly of particles provides the advantage that while it is porous, it comprises non-porous particulate material.

Abstract:

An improved system is disclosed for monitoring a patient's blood chemistry, wherein the system intermittently draws blood samples from the patient into a special sensor assembly having a plurality of analytical sensors, each sensitive to a particular parameter of the blood. After signals produced by these various sensors have been read, the system reinfuses the blood samples back into the patient. Withdrawal of the successive samples to a desired, optimal position within the sensor assembly is achieved by monitoring signals produced by one or more of the analytical sensors, themselves. This allows a catheter that connects the sensor assembly to the patient to have a variable length and internal volume and obviates the need for a separate, dedicated sensor for detecting the arrival of the blood sample at the desired position.
